This is a merlot for the cellar. Rich, dramatic and creamy, it throws a thick carpet of tannins across the palate that spread the ripest cherries and blackberries, assisted by scads of toasty oak. Fully dry, perfectly balanced, sensual and satisfying, it should improve for at least five years.
Medium ruby-red. Cool aromas of dark berries, mint and spices. Rich and dense but cool, with lively flavors of berries and flowers complicated by coffee and chocolatey oak. Finishes with broad, ripe tannins and very good length. The caramel note on the finish here would nicely complement short ribs.

Needs time to round out a few sharp edges, but most of the ingredients are in the right proportion. Best from 2006 through 2011. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
The 2002 Merlot (24,000 cases) possesses a beautiful dense plum/purple color as well as a sweet, rich nose of plums, black currants, and smoke. This sexy Merlot exhibits loads of concentrated, chewy fruit as well as abundant glycerin. Drink this gorgeous effort now and over the next 5ndash;7 years.
11% Cabernet Sauvignon; 7% Petit Verdot; 7% Cab. Franc. Of the three Duckhorn Merlots tasted this month, this one stands just a slight bit apart from the others by dint of the suggestions of mint, heather and dried herbs that bring a different twist of complexity to its aromas. It is, however, very much in step with its kin when it comes its ripeness and very rich, cherry-like fruit, and, but for an undisguised flare of finishing heat, it would join its siblings with a two-star award.
Mark Beringer took on Tom Rinaldirsquo;s role as director of winemaking at Duckhorn in 2000. But he hasnrsquo;t changed the style of merlot Rinaldi made famous, and this release plays directly to the success of that style, one of the few merlots in Napa to emphasize the red fruit flavors and the tenderness of the grape. The warmth of the region shows in the alcohol, but the wine absorbs that, and ends feeling cool and fresh. The aromatics are delicate, melding red fruit and earthiness, the texture supple. Delicious now, it should grow more voluptuous and complex over the next several years.
Three Palms Vineyard Merlot In the late 1800s, the land that is now home to the Three Palms Vineyard was a residence for famed San Francisco socialite Lillie Hitchcock Coit. She left her mark on San Francisco in the form of Coit Tower. She left her mark on the Napa Valley in the form of three lone palm trees, which were all that remained from her estate after the house fell into disuse and ruin. The 83-acre vineyard is located on the northeast side of the Napa Valley in an alluvial fan created by the outwash of Selby Creek where it spills out of Dutch Henry Canyon. The site is covered with volcanic stones washed down over the centuries from the canyon. The soil is rocky and well drained, causing the vines to send their roots far, wide, and deep to find the necessary nutrients and water. The stones aid the vineyard, absorbing the sun's heat during the day and radiating the heat during the night to protect the vines during frost season and help ripen the fruit. Except for a few vintages, we have produced a Three Palms Merlot since the inaugural 1978 vintage. 75% Merlot 11% Cabernet Sauvignon 9% Petit Verdot 5% Cabernet Franc
