Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot Napa Valley Estate Grown 1998

Winemaker's Notes:

Harvest Notes The 1998 vintage was 4 to 6 weeks late because of cool conditions felt throughout California during the spring and summer months. We had about 2 to 3 weeks of summer, then 3 months of fall. The cool temperatures allowed for long hang time, and with our low yields we were able to harvest grapes when the sugar and tannin maturity were in balance. The 1998 wines overall exhibit wonderful forward fruit and well-balanced acidity. Comments from the Winemaker Dense black cherries, chocolate, vanilla, raspberry, cedar, herbs and oak dominate the nose. The texture is dense, rich, and creamy, and the finish is lingering with sweet fruit. The fine, soft tannins are balanced and well integrated with the fruit and oak. The structure indicates that this wine will age well. Varietal Content 75 percent Merlot 17 percent Cabernet Sauvignon 5 percent Cabernet Franc 3 percent Petit Verdot Harvest Information Appellation: Napa Valley Harvest dates: September 8 - October 20, 1998 Average sugar at harvest: 25.7° Brix 23 vineyards harvested Cooperage 100 percent French oak château-style barrels (60 Gallons) Barrel aging: 17 months Age of barrels: 33% new, 50% second vintage, 17% third vintage Production and Technical Data Alcohol: 14.3% Titratable acidity: 0.53 g/ml 8-10 days fermentation at 80°F pH: 3.50
