A bit tight and matte on the nose with a pipe tobacco tone to the wood spice, jammy cassis, smoky mineral, buttered toast and braised herbal notes emerge. With air this goes through a rough period showing a chemical edge and a bit too much SO2. This is fairly big and chewy with a lot of depth to the rich crème de cassis, wood spice, roast meat, and candied red cherry fruits. A bit minty with a background eucalyptus note that helps keep things fresher. Turns a bit more stiff and aggressive on the back-end, which is drying but very long with that menthol/spearmint tone hovering over the slightly flat, candied blackberry fruit. This ends up being just too extracted and flat with clumsy tannins compressing the very drying finish. 2011-2020 87pts

Complex and varied nose and palate. I taste spice and mellow red fruit, raspberries and cherries. A bright and refreshing wine with presentable oak, medium acidity and body. Smooth tannins.
Raspberry jam on the nose -- black fruit palate. It's quite tight and could use a few more years to mature fully. Leathery finish.
Got aromas of vanilla, oak, caramel with red fruit (cherry) and plum. Soft tannins and acidity. Usually not a fan of merlot based wines but this is a good wine.
Tasted blinded at Snooth panel tasting and was very disappointed. My notes had notes like: unbalanced, short finish, peppermint tic-tacs, lacking in acid. Was very surprised this came from Duckhorn.
Soft, supple wine with good tannins. Aromas (and taste) of caramel, spice with black fruit and current. Note: I seem to get a lot of caramel / spice from Duckhorn wines.

Sweet oak abounds in the caramelly, coffee-tinged nose of this outgoing opus as does plenty of concentrated black-cherry fruit, and the wine's very deep, fruit-laden flavors do not disappoint. More about balance and careful crafting than it is about out-and-out strength, the wine is as polished as it is rich and is so very easy to taste even now. That said, this is no simple gulper meant for the near term, and, instead of signaling a short life span, its finesse and fine structure ensure that it will develop for a number of years.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.

Probably the most famous and celebrated Merlot that Napa Valley produces, Duckhorn Three Palms Vineyard is a true testament to the quality and character that Merlot can achieves in this ideal microclimate. A blend of 77% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc 3% Petit Verdot that is aged 20 months in all new French oak barrels. Wine Enthusiast Magazine rated this 2005 94 points and said “Duckhorn’s Three Palms bottling is one of the oldest and most consistent Merlot vineyard designations in California and this is a classic example. The wine always is very tannic. But the ’05 is dry and rich and complex in mineral-laden cherries and currants, with just the right application of new oak. Not just an entrepreneur but a true visionary, Dan Duckhorn was the first Napa winemaker to see the potential for Merlot as not just something to blend with Cabernet but as the primary grape in a great Napa Valley wine. He founded his winery on that premise and the rest is history. No other Merlot from California has achieved the success, the accolades or the following that Duckhorn enjoys. The wines are always highly allocated and snapped up by legions of loving admirers. We were able to acquire a small amount of this 2005 Duckhorn Merlot, and it’s simply superb. A richly layered wine through a blend of 86% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Each lot is vinified and aged separately for 16 months in oak barrels. Then the wines are tasted and the final blend is put back in barrel for another 2 months. It shows ripe berry notes tinged with vanilla and hints of minerals and mint. This well-structured wine is smooth and full-bodied with a silky texture, balanced acids and ample age-worthy tannins. The aroma exudes bountiful layers of strawberry, raspberry and cherry, accented by black olive, almond, and spice. On the palate, the flavors mirror the lush and layered bouquet with abundant red fruit notes (noticeably strawberry and cherry), complemented by cedar and oak.

Of the three Duckhorn Merlots tasted this month, this one stands just a slight bit apart from the others by dint of the suggestions of mint, heather and dried herbs that bring a different twist of complexity to its aromas. It is, however, very much in step with its kin when it comes its ripeness and very rich, cherry-like fruit, and, but for an undisguised flare of finishing heat, it would join its siblings with a two-star award.
