What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

Winemakers Notes

75% Cabernet, 25% Merlot
16 mo. new/second use fr. oak

Editorial Reviews

A bit tight and matte on the nose with a pipe tobacco tone to the wood spice, jammy cassis, smoky mineral, buttered toast and braised herbal notes emerge. With air this goes through a rough period showing a chemical edge and a bit too much SO2. This is fairly big and chewy with a lot of depth to the rich crème de cassis, wood spice, roast meat, and candied red cherry fruits. A bit minty with a background eucalyptus note that helps keep things fresher. Turns a bit more stiff and aggressive on the back-end, which is drying but very long with that menthol/spearmint tone hovering over the slightly flat, candied read more...

Still tight, but some nice structure. Leather and cedar box, oak and blackberries. Very firm drying tannins on the finish.

89 pts on a Barrel Tasting from Wine Spectator! - Intense and firmly structured, with vivid ripe plum and blackberry fruit that's well-centered, with a dusty, savory, earthy edge that provides a nice baseline. This has a nice measure of restraint and refinement. Best from 2009 through 2015. 11,782 cases made. ûJL - Aug 06 Issue of the Wine Spectator - Winemaker's notes: A classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, this elegantly balanced wine combines generous fruit-forward structure with age-worthy tannins and a long, satisfying finish. Winemaker Notes - A classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, this elegantly balanced wine combines generous fruit-forward structure with age-worthy tannins and a long, satisfying finish. From its layered aromatics to its lush palate of flavors, this wine brings together an array of red and black fruit elements, including red currant, baked plum, blackberry and sweet black cherry. Adding further depth to this core of ripe fruit are notes of vanilla, molasses, allspice, fresh herbs and black olive.

Soft, supple wine with good tannins. Aromas (and taste) of caramel, spice with black fruit and current.

Note: I seem to get a lot of caramel / spice from Duckhorn wines.
