What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

Winemakers Notes

Our Duck Shack Cabernet is meant to be poured wherever friends gather and tall tales are told. The full-bodied, dark fruit, layered with blackberries, cherry and plum, the hints of toasted oak, and the rich, long finish is the perfect complement to memorable gatherings with good friends and fine food. The winery recommends pairing this with a grilled steak and sautéed mushrooms.

Editorial Reviews

stinky, earthy, fudgy, toast, smells like a chocolate chip blondie, candied too with smoldering herbs and creosote. Sweet and a bit thick with unintegrated acidity, hot, clumsy, drying, lots of prune/plum fruit, a bit minty on the finish which is thankfully short but the tannins and acids stick around, medicinal in a not good way. Disjoined but big. 84pts

Reviews

Has kind of a campfire flavor in the mouth. Lots of heat and forrest spices. A nice level of complexity and chewiness.

Lush texture, like a silken comforter. Conifer forest sap, good clean aroma. Would drink with a pork tenderloin with a garlic butter.

Pleasant light black fruit aromas. Boy that's acidic, but the huge black bunches of berries are pretty pleasant, especially by the finish where they're joined by a hint of black olives, a touch of licorice, and some nice cherry flavors.

Black berries and cherries on the nose, some licorice follows in the mouth. Lots of fruit, nice structure and a thick oaky finish.

From the Beverage Testing Institute World Wine Championship:

85 points. Silver medal. Deep garnet violet color. Juicy aromas of cassis, blueberry pie, angel food cake, and menthol tobacco follow through on a round entry to a dryish medium-to-full body with tart berry skin, mineral, and nut skin notes. Finishes with a firm, drying, dusty tannin fade. (tasted on Jun-29-2009)
