Duchamp Syrah Estate 2002
Winemaker's Notes:
This elegant Syrah is imminently reminiscent of a Northern French Rhone style wine . Luminescent ruby color with complex yet integrated aromas of leather, tar, smoked meat and gunflint. Bright, spicy, tart cherry flavors on entry, punctuated by a peppery edge. Refreshingly light touch of oak, adding spice and nuance to the impressive red fruit dominated flavor array. Sweet,easy-on-the-palate tannins that extend the moderately long, cherry liqueur-like finish. Drinks well early but will improve 3-4 years and hold for 7-8.

Duchamp Winery vineyards lie at the Eastern edge of the Dry Creek Valley appellation. For its small size, it nevertheless shows diversity of soils and characteristics. The vineyard is designed as a high-density planting with 3000 vines per acre on a meter-by-meter grid. Cool afternoon breezes further enhance the fruit components. Our objective is to achieve uniform ripening with maximum flavor development. Because our spacing is dense and our vine heads are trained close to the ground, and because cluster-thinning is performed rigorously, each vine is made to produce a very small quantity of highly concentrated fruit.
All vineyard work is done by hand and we practice sustainable and organic farming. We consider Amigo Bob Cantisano, an expert in this field, to be an important member of our team. With all this attention to detail in the vineyard, we are able to produce wines of great complexity, intense concentration, and true varietal character. Read less
