Dry Creek Vineyard Fume Blanc Sonoma County 2016

Member Review by vin0vin0:

Not a bad Sauvignon Blanc with bright citrus, lemon and grapefruit. A little on the harsh side with some metallic bite but overall ok for the price point.

The history of Dry Creek Vineyard is a long and colorful one. Founded in 1972 by David S. Stare, Dry Creek Vineyard paved the way for a renaissance of winemaking and viticulture in the Dry Creek Valley. Before his arrival, the Dry Creek Valley was little more than a few family farms and prune orchards. It was Dave’s vision to start a Loire Valley inspired winery that reintroduced consumers to the wines of northern Sonoma County. Without a doubt, David Stare is a pioneer. Heading west in the late 1960s, Dave personified the character and work ethic of early Gold Rush pioneers. Educated at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dave worked for the B&O Railroad for several years but quickly realized that his true calling was in the wine industry. Inspired by his trips to the Loire Valley, Dave headed west to California to start his own family winery. Upon his arrival, Dave began taking winemaking classes at UC Davis as a graduate student. On the weekends, he spent time looking at vineyard land from Monterey to Mendocino. It was during one of those weekend trips that fate drew Dave to the Dry Creek Valley. When he saw an old prune orchard across the street from the Dry Creek General Store, Dave realized that he had found his dream location. He purchased the orchard and began planting vines. Captivated by his memories of Loire-style wines, Sauvignon Blanc seemed destined to figure prominently in the Dry Creek Vineyard portfolio. However, several famed vineyard specialists advised him against planting Sauvignon Blanc. Always defiant, Dave planted the varietal anyway and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, our second-generation family owned winery continues to evolve and grow to meet the demands of a global wine marketplace. The primary mission of our winery is to produce distinctive wines that over deliver on quality. For more than 30 years, this pursuit of winemaking excellence has lead to many international awards and accolades. With a loyal following of wine club members and customers, the future of Dry Creek Vineyard has never been brighter. Read less

Quite possibly the palest wine I've ever seen in a glass. It is darned close to distilled water in color Herbal, minty, peppery nose. Very very light bodied on the palate. Herbal aroma translates to herbal (bell pepper) taste. Lightness makes it quite refreshing. I yearn for acid, but with the lack of other palate sensations, I'm glad it's not really there. US$9.99 at Total Wine.

Straw bright hue, with grassy green apple and citrus aromas; meyer lemon, tart apple and a hint of orange rind focused on racy acidity. Refreshing.

This new vintage harkens back to the early days of Fumé Blanc at Dry Creek Vineyard. At first swirl, pungent grassy aromas framed by kaffir limes leap from the glass. On the palate, the wine displays racy citrus characters along with granny smith apples, Meyer lemon and orange zest. The grassy elements repeat on the finish with acidity that is both refreshing and brisk. Dave Stare pioneered this style back in 1972 and this wine certainly carries forward all of those old school elements. Simply delicious!

Very light color. Great citrus fruit on the nose. The grapefruit kick at the end gives you the biggest dleight of this refreshing wine. With 13.5%, this wine is perfect on a hot day.

HISTORY: Since 1972, we have produced Fumé Blanc – a wine at the heart and soul of our family winery. Modeled after the classic wines from the Loire Valley in France, our stainless steel fermented, no oak style Fumé Blanc is crisp, balanced and immediately drinkable. Winery founder David Stare was the first vintner to plant Sauvignon Blanc in the Dry Creek Valley, and we are proud to carry on his legacy producing this classic, dry white wine. GROWING SEASON: The 2016 harvest began with a relatively even growing season after welcome winter rains helped to alleviate the drought conditions. The entire ripening season enjoyed cooler than average daytime highs and cold nights – perfect for developing complex aromas and flavors. Harvest arrived earlier than usual, with a slightly smaller yield of exceptional quality fruit. September brought morning cloud cover and beautiful days with temperatures cruising along in the mid-80s, which led to delicious ripe flavors with lower sugars and higher acidity. WINEMAKER COMMENTS: Our 45th vintage of Fumé Blanc is a beautiful wine that emanates the classic Dry Creek Vineyard “house” style of Sauvignon Blanc At first swirl, aromatics of Meyer lemon, key lime and lemongrass leap forward from the glass. On the palate, the wine is refreshing with flavors of lemon curd, tangerine and hints of dried thyme and freshly cut grass. This wine is mouthwatering and delicious with lovely intensity and a clean, pure finish. Enjoy on a warm summer’s day, paired with fresh oysters – pure bliss! ALCOHOL: 13.5% pH: 3.36 TA: 6.3g/L

GROWING SEASON: A dry and warm winter began the 2015 growing season with budbreak coming in early March. Cool weather came during fruit set, with not a lot of sunshine. A heat spike came in late June. However, the grapes ripened evenly and flavor and development were right where we wanted them to be. Yields were a bit down from previous vintages, but the quality was extremely high. This was one of the earliest harvests in history with one of the earliest finishes in our history! WINEMAKER COMMENTS: The 2015 Fumé Blanc is a beautiful wine that emanates the classic Dry Creek Vineyard “house” style of Sauvignon Blanc. At first swirl you experience lemon-lime citrus characters and a zesty mineral edge. On the palate, vibrant Meyer lemon, kaffir lime and grassy characters are evident. This wine is mouthwatering and delicious with lovely intensity and a clean, pure finish. Enjoy on a warm summer’s day with a bucket of fresh oysters – pure bliss! GROWING SEASON: An extremely dry winter began the 2014 growing season, giving us year number three of the drought. Unusually warm days in January and February were cause for concern. However, rain came in March and April at just the right time to recharge the ground water for the early growing season. Warm dry weather extended into summer, with very few heat spikes and ideal growing conditions. Harvest came fast and early with ripe flavors at sugar levels lower than normal. The fruit tasted beautiful as it came into the winery. Harvest finished earlier than normal and in December 2014, the winery had almost 20 inches of rain in two weeks - a welcome relief for the dry vineyards! WINEMAKER COMMENTS: At first swirl, this beautiful wine emanates the classic Dry Creek Vineyard “house” style of Sauvignon Blanc with crisp lemon-lime citrus characters and a zesty mineral edge. Several more turns of the glass reveal tart green apple, fresh grass and a steely quality that harkens to a good Sancerre. On the palate, the wine dances with wonderful bright fresh fruit notes and juicy acidity. The wine is bone dry but not overly so - it has a lovely intensity that finishes clean and pure. A wonderful wine that is simply delicious! PH: 3.29 TA: 0.73g/100mL ALCOHOL: 13.5%
