Dry Creek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Creek Valley 2015

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Dusty earth and candied aromas of plum, grape and cherry, a touch floral as well. Cherry and cranberry fruit on the palate, tart and tannic with smoky tree roots and thick earth towards the finish.

The history of Dry Creek Vineyard is a long and colorful one. Founded in 1972 by David S. Stare, Dry Creek Vineyard paved the way for a renaissance of winemaking and viticulture in the Dry Creek Valley. Before his arrival, the Dry Creek Valley was little more than a few family farms and prune orchards. It was Dave’s vision to start a Loire Valley inspired winery that reintroduced consumers to the wines of northern Sonoma County. Without a doubt, David Stare is a pioneer. Heading west in the late 1960s, Dave personified the character and work ethic of early Gold Rush pioneers. Educated at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dave worked for the B&O Railroad for several years but quickly realized that his true calling was in the wine industry. Inspired by his trips to the Loire Valley, Dave headed west to California to start his own family winery. Upon his arrival, Dave began taking winemaking classes at UC Davis as a graduate student. On the weekends, he spent time looking at vineyard land from Monterey to Mendocino. It was during one of those weekend trips that fate drew Dave to the Dry Creek Valley. When he saw an old prune orchard across the street from the Dry Creek General Store, Dave realized that he had found his dream location. He purchased the orchard and began planting vines. Captivated by his memories of Loire-style wines, Sauvignon Blanc seemed destined to figure prominently in the Dry Creek Vineyard portfolio. However, several famed vineyard specialists advised him against planting Sauvignon Blanc. Always defiant, Dave planted the varietal anyway and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, our second-generation family owned winery continues to evolve and grow to meet the demands of a global wine marketplace. The primary mission of our winery is to produce distinctive wines that over deliver on quality. For more than 30 years, this pursuit of winemaking excellence has lead to many international awards and accolades. With a loyal following of wine club members and customers, the future of Dry Creek Vineyard has never been brighter. Read less

A nice blend of smoke, pickle barrel, vanilla and sweet fruit with a bit of background cocoa, dirt and herbs. A bit simple with sweet wood and dark cherry fruit on the palate, good acids and well measured tannins. Turns a bit blocky and stiff on the backend with a lovely hint of bitter cocoa that cut through the sweetness and leads to a moderatly long finish with a bit of spicy and mineral. Really fine bottle of wine at this price. 87pts

Oaky at first then turning really meaty and smoky with tobacco and tea notes to the dark, brooding fruit. This reveals both sweet ripe fruit and dried fruit notes with a deep mulberry jam tone. Gains a new nuance with each sniff revealing herbs, roast meats, baking spices, dates, cured meats, and a strong black tea top note. A bit matte up front, tight yet not chewy, really elegant and fresh with a suppleness to the wine that belies its power. Fresh and rich with ripe cabernet notes a bit beefy and very black cherry fruited. Nice finish that is really fruit driven yet with emerging complexity and subtle spice tone. This feels very natural yet is big and explosive in the mouth. There’s a lot to this wine. It can compete with wines selling for twice the price! 2011-2025 94pts.

Christmas 2013, Binny's. Very good, hard to find locally (read impossible), but easily found it in Chicago. I like low alcohol dry white's in spring/summer. Had this with country ribs on Easter Sunday, 2014, with my mother and brother in attendance. A keeper (bought a spare bottle), but it's up against my other mantra...so many wines so little time. The second battle disappeared when Mary got her thirst for summer deck wine back, after a hard winter of chasing down reds..

This wonderfully crisp, incredibly refreshing dry Chenin Blanc perfectly represents our love for this classic grape variety. At first swirl, fragrant aromas of tropical stone fruits such as white peach, melon, and citrus leap from the glass. A few minutes in the glass reveal the wine’s signature mineral characters, and even some chalky notes, which are an ode to the variety’s Loire Valley roots. The palate expresses soft apple flavors along with zesty citrus and, overall, an excellent sense of balance and freshness. A perfect patio sipper, Chenin Blanc is summertime in a bottle! - Winemaker Comments

Very nice, simple sonoma cab. Slightly chalky with nice dark fruit, medium tannin and a bit of acidity. Not overly complex but easy on the palette and quite tasty.

GROWING SEASON: A dry and warm winter began the 2015 growing season with budbreak coming in early March. Cool weather came during fruit set, with not a lot of sunshine. A heat spike came in late June. However, the grapes ripened evenly and flavor and development were right where we wanted them to be. Yields were a bit down from previous vintages, but the quality was extremely high. This was one of our earliest recorded harvests with one of the earliest finishes in our history! WINEMAKER COMMENTS: This impeccable Cabernet Sauvignon displays lively aromatics of black cherry, black currant and plum. Additional airing reveals nuances of leather and toasted almonds. The palate is full-bodied and rich with elegant flavors of black raspberries and cocoa powder. The wine is fruit-forward and youthful, with moderate tannins and a finish of white pepper. This Cabernet is very characteristic of a Dry Creek Valley Bordeaux. It offers intensity and richness and reflects the terroir beautifully. HISTORY: The Dry Creek Valley is an undiscovered gem, producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in California. Primarily known for Zinfandel, the valley has almost as much Cabernet Sauvignon planted. Our region’s unique terroir provides just the right growing conditions. A perfect microclimate, we are blessed with long days of vibrant sunshine and cool foggy evenings allowing for exquisitely ripened Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Bright cherry fruit framed by floral and spice elements create wines that speak to the distinctive soil and growing conditions in our appellation. GROWING SEASON: An extremely dry winter began the 2014 growing season, giving us year number three of the drought. Unusually warm days in January and February were cause for concern. However, rain came in March and April at just the right time to recharge the ground water for the early growing season. Warm dry weather extended into summer, with very few heat spikes and ideal growing conditions. Harvest came fast and early with ripe flavors at sugar levels lower than normal. The fruit tasted beautiful as it came into the winery. Harvest finished earlier than normal and in December 2014, the winery had almost 20 inches of rain in two weeks - a welcome relief for the dry vineyards! WINEMAKER COMMENTS: This impeccable wine displays wonderful aromatics of cherry, black currant and blackberry notes. Additional airing reveals dried floral, thyme and hints of cassis and dark chocolate. The palate is full-bodied and fleshy with excellent tannin and structure. The wine is silky and lush with superb balance. The finish lingers on showing great texture and charm. This Cabernet is very characteristic of a Dry Creek Valley Bordeaux. It offers intensity and richness and reflects the terroir beautifully. A classic summertime sipper, our wonderfully crisp and refreshing Dry Chenin Blanc perfectly represents our love for this classic grape variety. In the glass, fragrant aromatics such as white peach, melon and citrus are immediately appealing. This vintage displays the classic Loire character of earth and crushed minerals that give the wine depth and nuance. There is an underlying chalky quality with some spicy undertones that really make this wine shine. The palate is equally fine with excellent acid lifting the ripe apple and zesty citrus flavors. Perfectly balanced and harmonious from start to finish, our Chenin Blanc is quite possibly the value of the century for a white wine of this quality and character. - Winery ALCOHOL: 13.0% RESIDUAL SUGAR: 0.6% pH: 3.57 TA: 0.73g/100mL

GROWING SEASON: The 2013 harvest will be remembered as a season of near perfect growing conditions. It was also one of our driest seasons on record. By mid-January, it seemed that Mother Nature turned off the rain spigot. Overall, winter was extremely mild. Spring budbreak was normal with frost of little or no concern. The summer growing season was outstanding with moderate temperatures. A few heat spikes in late May and early June had us thinking it would be an unusually warm summer. However, July, August and September were beautiful with moderate temperatures. Harvest conditions were excellent. Yields were normal and the quality was superb with all varietals achieving optimal ripeness levels. WINEMAKER COMMENTS: The 2013 vintage was “cool” in every sense of the word. We had a very mild summer and a crisp Fall, which allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and fully. It was an abundant harvest so we have lots of delicious fruit. It was also very dry so the grapes had to work extra hard to get water, but stressed grapes often ensure that the best fruit rises to the top. The 2013 vintage is showing lots of lively spice. This wine opens with deep blackberry and currant on the nose with hints of anise. The mouthfeel is gentle, and the finish is lengthy. This Cabernet is very characteristic of a Dry Creek Valley Bordeaux. It offers intensity and richness and reflects the terroir beautifully. Started back in the early 70's by David Stare, Dry Creek Vineyards is a pioneering winery in this region of Sonoma. Known back in the day for Zin and Sauvignon Blanc they quickly expanded their offerings to excellent Chardonnays and Cabernets. This 2012 Cab is sourced entirely from Dry Creek Valley, a region generally thought to be warm for Cabernet. With careful sourcing from hillside vineyards where the cool nights and foggy mornings balance the bright sunlight that bathes the valley. They're able to find beautifully ripe and exceptionally balanced Cabernet grapes. Of course 2012 was a near perfect vintage. This wine is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec, 3% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc aged 20 months in French & Hungarian oak; 20% new. Wine Enthusiast Magazine named it an Editors Choice with a 91 point score saying "This wine over-delivers a mouthful of juicy quality vis-a-vis price, combining Cab with smaller dabs of Petit Verdot, Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Savory blackberry and cassis lift the fruitiness, seasoned in savory tones of black tea and cranberry that give it an edge. Fleshy and smooth, it’s a good wine to stock up on."
