Drc Romanee-Conti 1995

Winemaker's Notes:

Unctuous, showing delicious fruit and terroir character. Full-bodied, rich and ripe, with attractive rose petal, plum, black cherry and currant character. Very ripe and very seductive.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, located in Vosne-Romanée, is one of the most prestigious vineyard sites in Burgundy, France. The domaine boasts seven Grand Cru properties, and the two monopolies (meaning they are owned and operated by the domaine itself) La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche are considered the finest vineyards in all of Burgundy. The other five - Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, Grands Ėchezaux, Ėchezaux and Montrachet  (which overlaps with Chassagne) - are also among the upper echelon. With the exception of the Chardonny-only Montrachet, Domaine de La Romanée-Conti is known for producing exceptional, rare reds from Pinot Noir, prized for their structured fruit, perfume and longevity.  The vineyard had already been named Romanée since the 13th century when it was first acquired by the de Croonembourg family. The hyphenation is derived from a 1760 bidding war between Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV and Louis François ler de Bourbon, Prince de Conti. You can guess who won.  These vineyard are on slopes facing east and south-east for optimal grape-ripening exposure, with iron-rich limestone and marl soils. Some of the vines are quite old by Burgundy standards, up to 50 years, which adds to the power of the wines. The small production wines are from vineyards that are organically cultivated, with yields kept low.  Read less

Pale to medium ruby with a touch of brick. The La Tache gives very little on the nose to begin with but soon blossoms into the most incredible cherry compote, black truffle, cloves, loam, saucisson and tobacco leaf aromas. This wine is spectacular. Powerful, dense, meaty, and thick, it is exceedingly long and possesses a firm tannic backbone that requires cellaring. Projected maturity: 2005-2018. The dark ruby-colored La Tache displays a black cherry and super-spicy bouquet with touches of buttery toast from the new oak and a concentrated, enveloping, minerally, red and black fruit-filled, Asian spice-packed personality.
