Drc Romanee-Conti 1993

Winemaker's Notes:

This has a vivid, deep purple colour and cherry aromas on the nose. The tannins are supple and there is great weight on the palate. An elegant wine with wonderful balance and impressive length.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, located in Vosne-Romanée, is one of the most prestigious vineyard sites in Burgundy, France. The domaine boasts seven Grand Cru properties, and the two monopolies (meaning they are owned and operated by the domaine itself) La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche are considered the finest vineyards in all of Burgundy. The other five - Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, Grands Ėchezaux, Ėchezaux and Montrachet  (which overlaps with Chassagne) - are also among the upper echelon. With the exception of the Chardonny-only Montrachet, Domaine de La Romanée-Conti is known for producing exceptional, rare reds from Pinot Noir, prized for their structured fruit, perfume and longevity.  The vineyard had already been named Romanée since the 13th century when it was first acquired by the de Croonembourg family. The hyphenation is derived from a 1760 bidding war between Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV and Louis François ler de Bourbon, Prince de Conti. You can guess who won.  These vineyard are on slopes facing east and south-east for optimal grape-ripening exposure, with iron-rich limestone and marl soils. Some of the vines are quite old by Burgundy standards, up to 50 years, which adds to the power of the wines. The small production wines are from vineyards that are organically cultivated, with yields kept low.  Read less

restaurant purchase- popped and poured. Awesome nose- violets, cinnamon, nutmeg, plums, tobacco- kept changing as the night wore on. The palate is nowhere near as forthcoming as the nose- it is lean and austere, but opened occasionally to show a wonderful plush texture and a lot more body. I could smell this for hours. I'd say 6-8 years at least.

As usual, La Tache reveals the most saturated deep ruby color of the DRC's, a tight but promising nose of smoky, game-like aromas intertwined with red and black fruits, minerals, and vanillin from new... Closed and tough, featuring tannic, austere character that's almost rustic. Offers plenty of redberry and blackberry flavors. Seems somewhat awkward and off-balance now, but it's a big wine and the potential is there. Try in 2005. Wine Spectator. The Romanee-Conti is extremely backward, tightly knit, and closed, with hard tannin, an excellent to outstanding mouthfeel, and a nearly impenetrable personality. Although this is usually a fragrant,... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Pinot Noir wine from Burgundy in France. 1993 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Romanee Conti 750ml
