Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2011

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

This wine is fresh and vibrant in acidity and structure, yet penetrating on the palate with sweet, ripe stonefruit and yellow floral notes. Hints of lime pith and jasmine tea add texture and astringency on the long, mineral-laden finish.

When Ernst Loosen (pronounced loh-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s best-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class wines. And, most importantly, he turned to gentler cellar practices that allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of handling and technological meddling. Read less

Elegant aromas of cherry, acacia blossom and pine nut. Succulent and creamy on the palate, tinged with nuances of herbs, nuts and vanilla. With fine balance, this spätlese finishes with an underlying sense of slate.

Restrained and perfectly ripe, this captures the delicacy possible from this vineyard in its clarity and shape, the green fruit and mineral notes crystalline in their expression. Underneath, the minerality runs like a stream, brisk and cool.

Intense aromas and flavors of peach strudel and apple pie feature notes of custard and gooseberry. The vibrant finish echoes with long, pure glazed citrus notes. A powerful style. Drink now through 2030.
