Dr. Loosen Riesling Spatlese Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2015

Member Review by zufrieden:

Weingut Dr. Loosen has produced a magnificent Spatlese from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Weinberge; the nose evinces some light cake spice plus sweet apple pie and icing sugar; aging has been slight, as the palate shows rich pear and apple sweetness that refreshes as much as it lingers. Will last another 20 years. 92 points.

When Ernst Loosen (pronounced loh-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s best-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class wines. To achieve this, Ernst dramatically reduced his crop size and stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers. And, most importantly, he turned to gentler cellar practices that allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of handling and technological meddling. Read less

This 2011 Riesling from Mosel, Germany has an aromatic mix of apple, peach and lime. Its lightly sweet on the mid-palette and has a short mineral/slate finish. The peak time for this wine should begin 2016. Pairs nicely with spicy Asian foods and seafood. Best served at 54 degrees.

What a wine! Excellent and should age well for a couple of years if you can wait that long!

Dense and rich citrus flavors, but much sweeter than I prefer.

A whiff of saffron lends a savory tone to this flirtatiously floral spätlese. It’s radiant with lemon-lime acidity, yet plump with sweet stone-fruit flavors. A murmur of bitter citrus pith adds complexity and vibe.

This wine reflects Erdener Treppchen’s ferrous red soils clearly in the red cast of the fruit, from the red-apple scents to the notes of tart, tiny berries. It gets meatier with air, its earthy flavors growing deeper and more resonant with each sip. Powerful stuff, this calls for a meaty main course, like pork with lingonberry jam.

Richly flavored, with fresh-cut apple and pear notes on a firm frame. Tarragon and cream details show on the exuberantly spiced finish. Drink now through 2038. 0300 cases imported.

Ernst Loosen and winemaker Bernhard Schug hit a sweet spot in 2013 with this Spätlese from Wehlener Sonnenuhr’s blue slate slopes. The wine is slow to emerge, earthy and quiet, with a jangly feel to the acidity. As that acidity takes control, it gathers the ripe peach and fresh pineapple around it, channeling the earth in a sense of cool, smooth stoniness. The wine feels shapely and elegant, and firm enough to age for a decade.

Plush for the vintage, with open-textured green pear and peach flavors. Offers a minerally finish, with some ripe kiwifruit and savory spice notes. Drink now through 2035.

Intense aromas and flavors of peach strudel and apple pie feature notes of custard and gooseberry. The vibrant finish echoes with long, pure glazed citrus notes. A powerful style. Drink now through 2030.

Elegant aromas of cherry, acacia blossom and pine nut. Succulent and creamy on the palate, tinged with nuances of herbs, nuts and vanilla. With fine balance, this spätlese finishes with an underlying sense of slate.
