Dr Loosen Riesling Beerenauslese Quarters Gift Tubes 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Dr. Loosen produces only Riesling from traditional, slate-soil vineyards in the Mosel valley. A full range of Prädikat wines is made from six grand cru single-vineyard sites. The vineyards of Dr. Loosen owe their excellent quality to three major factors: the exceptional regional climate of the Middle Mosel area, the mineral-rich slate and volcanic soils, and the incredible age of the estate’s ungrafted Riesling vines. All of Dr. Loosen’s six major vineyards were designated as Erste Lage (equivalent to grand cru) in the 1868 Prussian classification of Mosel vineyards, which was undertaken for tax assessment purposes. This classification predates the grand cru system in Burgundy, and was updated by Stuart Pigott and Hugh Johnson in the Wine Atlas of Germany (1995). Beerenauslese (“berry select”) is a rich, honeyed dessert wine made from grapes that have been shriveled by botrytis, the “Noble Rot.” These extremely concentrated, moldy grapes are painstakingly separated from the unaffected fruit and vinified to make one of Germany’s most prized vinous treasures. The legal minimum for BA must weight is 110° Oechsle, but at Dr. Loosen it usually starts with a minimum of 120° Oechsle. This Beerenauslese, exclusively from estate-owned vineyards, has a juicy mouthful of ripe fruits with a finish that is long and satisfying, but never heavy. It is perfect as an aperitif, with foie gras, or with light desserts featuring fresh fruits.

When Ernst Loosen (pronounced loh-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s best-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class wines. To achieve this, Ernst dramatically reduced his crop size and stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers. And, most importantly, he turned to gentler cellar practices that allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of handling and technological meddling. Read less
