Dr. Loosen Riesling Auslese Gold Cap Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Ürziger Würzgarten 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

94 points Pierre Rovani (Wine Advocate) on the gold capsule (non-auction) label: The densely layered 2001 Riesling Auslese Erdener Pralat (Gold Capsule) has intense smoky, honeyed aromas. Pear syrup imbued with slate and minerals are intermingled with red berries and kumquats in this medium-bodied, rich, thick wine. Concentrated, powerful, and deep, it appears to have the muscle of a Beerenauslese. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020. (Dec 2002)

Weingut Dr Loosen:

When Ernst Loosen (pronounced loh-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s best-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class wines. To achieve this, Ernst dramatically reduced his crop size and stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers. And, most importantly, he turned to gentler cellar practices that allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of handling and technological meddling. Read less

Cool and exotic, this plays green fruit flavors like plum and kiwi off white flower notes. It's delicate yet surprisingly substantial, the velvety texture hiding an acidity that will keep this bright and lively for another fifteen years, at least.

Very perfumed, almost Muscat-like in aroma, this Riesling delivers creamy flavors of vanilla custard and lime on a delicate frame. Lacks depth at this stage.

This offers concentrated peach and apple aromas and flavors, but shuts down on the finish with some astringency. There's fine acidity backing it all, but it's out of sorts now. Then, a peach-infused aftertaste convinces me. Best from 2006-2020.
