Tasting Notes
Vivid ruby/garnet colour, with a soft
bouquet of ripe concentrated fruit, plums,
black cherry and hints of chocolate. On the
palate full-bodied, with an iron back-bone
of mature tannins andacidity. A long and
elegantly dry finish.
The Viticultural Year
After a wet and cold spring, the weather
from August onwards could not have been
more perfect. A small harvest of very
healthy grapes was gathered under ideal
conditions a week earlier than usual. An
excellent vintage producing full, extremely
rich, read more...

- Decanted 10 hours prior to service. At 6 hours, it was overpowering and still showing some spirit on the nose and finish. The '77 Dow's needs little introduction and is a very big wine, as is its older brother from 1970. Still showing dark ruby-purple with a suggestion of age showing on the edge, but its core is opaque. Lovely fragrances that depict just picked plums I did so yesterday, a malt character which I don't often sense and an herbal note as well. The concentrated and fleshy juice is packed with powerful, dense dark berry fruit, highlighted by a touch of spicy licorice and cedar. read more...

- Vintage Port is the outstanding wine of an outstanding year. Perhaps on average only three times in a decade is the weather suitable for the declaration of a Vintage year and only a small handful of vineyards in the Alto Douro produce wines of the potential to become Vintage Port. The wine is aged for two to two and a half years in wood before being bottled, unfiltered. The pride of every shipper, Vintage Port can be purchased at once and allowed, over many years, to mature and develop a unique character, completely different from all wood-aged Port.
