Dow's Porto 1985

Winemaker's Notes:

Excellent ruby colour, with rich and complex aromas of mature berry fruit and hints of spices. On the palate good fruit flavours, full bodied, excellent round tannins and a long lingering finish. The Viticultural Year The winter and spring of 1985 was extremely wet, with a cold spell in May, and by June the vines were some three weeks behind normal development. Hot and dry weather in July and August brought development back to normal. The summer-like weather continued from early September right up to the vintage. The fine weather continued into October with a slight drop in temperature and some rain during the night of the 3rd/4th but after a few cooler days the hot, fine weather returned and remained unbroken right to the end of the vintage, with maximum temperatures of 30ºc daily. Wine Specifications Alcohol: 20% vol (20ºC) Total acidity: 3.98 g/l tartaric acid Baumé: 2.7

Currently six members of the Symington family are fully engaged in the management of Dow’s, they represent the 12th and 13th generations involved in the Port trade via their great grandmother Beatrice Atkinson and over 350 years since their ancestors played a significant role in laying the foundations of the Port trade. Together with the family’s other Port firms, Dow’s is the only surviving independent Port producer in the hands of just one family amongst all the great historic Port companies. Following the great investments made in vineyards in the late 19th century, the company was one of the first to build a modern winery in the region in 1964, later to be adapted to become one of the first wineries with temperature control in all its fermentation tanks. In 1997, the company built a new winery at Quinta do Sol, widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative in Portugal. This was a major investment for the Symington family. The company’s commitment to top quality vineyard ownership, winemaking and the finest Ports remains at the heart of this family business. Peter Symington and his son Charles, Dow’s principal wine makers, have between them been nominated ‘Fortified Wine Maker of the Year’ at the International Wine Challenge a record seven times. These awards are testament to Dow’s reputation as one of the finest premium Port producers. Read less

A very good vintage port with classic spicy red fruit aromas and flavors leading up to a long lingering finish. Tasted in early 2009, this port is well along in its development and the tannins have been tamed, but I think it could benefit from even more time aging. This review applies to a half bottle

An attractive 1985 that's starting to show well, with aromas of cherry, spice and nut. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, sweet aftertaste.--Dow vertical. Best from 2001 through 2010. (JS) Wine Spectator. A Port wine from Douro in Portugal. 1985 Dow Vintage Port 750ml
