Dow 1963

Winemaker's Notes:

Tasting Notes Balance and power are important characteristics of the Dow 1963. Impressive garnet/ruby colour, with aromas of blackberries, and hints of honey. On the palate, opulent fruit flavours, complex, plenty of rich tannins and a long finish. The Viticultural Year A normal winter with rain and some snow in the higher vineyards. The weather began to dry out at the end of April. The vines showing promise early. It was cold and wet until the middle of June. Then July and August were fine, with very dry weather. Some rain fell, perfectly timed, in mid September.

Currently six members of the Symington family are fully engaged in the management of Dow’s, they represent the 12th and 13th generations involved in the Port trade via their great grandmother Beatrice Atkinson and over 350 years since their ancestors played a significant role in laying the foundations of the Port trade. Together with the family’s other Port firms, Dow’s is the only surviving independent Port producer in the hands of just one family amongst all the great historic Port companies. Following the great investments made in vineyards in the late 19th century, the company was one of the first to build a modern winery in the region in 1964, later to be adapted to become one of the first wineries with temperature control in all its fermentation tanks. In 1997, the company built a new winery at Quinta do Sol, widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative in Portugal. This was a major investment for the Symington family. The company’s commitment to top quality vineyard ownership, winemaking and the finest Ports remains at the heart of this family business. Peter Symington and his son Charles, Dow’s principal wine makers, have between them been nominated ‘Fortified Wine Maker of the Year’ at the International Wine Challenge a record seven times. These awards are testament to Dow’s reputation as one of the finest premium Port producers. Read less

Ruby color with slight bricking on the meniscus. Spicy, cherry, Kirsch and chocolate notes with a good dose of alcohol on the nose. An evolved and seemingly mature bottle that was initially quite cool given the outdoor temperature by the lake this evening. Medium bodied initially but over time it gained weight and rounded out to a fuller body. Beguiling black pepper, butterscotch and brown sugar flavors added some complexity to the mid-palate and dominant dark berry fruit that was very tasty. The finish was extremely long but marred by VA, otherwise a really enjoyable but slightly 'advanced' bottle. Initially at 94 points but the alcohol made me rethink my initial score.

Tasted from magnum. This is a wonderfully silky and rich wine. Deep and concentrated raspberry and cherry character, with a hint of spice. Full-bodied and very sweet, with layers of fruit and a long finish.--Dow vertical. Drink now. (JS) Wine Spectator. A Port wine from Douro in Portugal. 1963 Dow Vintage Port 750ml

This wine has medium-deep, slightly plummy, maturing nicely; sweet, rich, compact, slightly chocolately bouquet...fairly full-bodied, chunky fruit, rich yet lissom, great power and penetration. 'This is a monumental wine with a great balance of
