Food Pairings for Douro DOC Altano Reserva
Very dark--more purple than red--opaque in the glass. Oaky, viney, some berry aromas. Slight tinge on the nose that I suspect is alcohol. Not terribly full-bodied on the palate--surprising since the deep color had me ready for a big, mouth-filling punch. Some blackberry and tartness on the tip and edges of the tongue. Some tannin as the wine moves around in the palate. Disappointing bitterness in the back of the throat but this fades to an actually very nice finish that lingers for 15-20 seconds. Not a particularly complex wine, and certainly not, to my way of thinking, a great wine. We are going to have spicy sausage sandwiches for dinner tonight, and this wine just might hit the spot. US$17.99 at Total Wine.
