Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Eiswein 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The Wine Doctor explains that the Dönnhoff family have been making wine in Nahe since 1750, and the latest member of the dynasty to run the estate is Helmut. Over the centuries the family estate grew to about 12 hectares, although in recent years Helmut has accelerated this trend so that the total area of vines now under his direction is more like 20 hectares. An inspection of his vineyard portfolio is rather like a rundown of the top sites around his location in Oberhausen. The vineyards here include a variety of soils, in the case of Dönnhoff his include decomposed grey slate and volcanic rocks such as porhpyry, and are planted predominantly with Riesling which accounts for 80% of the vines, the remainder being Burgundian varieties including Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder. Dönnhoff's holdings include part of the 8.5 hectare Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle, a site rich in the aforementioned slate and volcanic rock, melaphyr as well as porphyry, an igneous melange which is perhaps responsible for some of his most exalted wines which seem to have the power to send some writers into raptures. Perhaps equally famous is the Oberhäuser Brücke vineyard, again dominated by grey slate; this site is owned in its entirety by Dönnhoff, and is notable as the source of firm, mineral, masculine wines, and of course his fabulous, cult-status eiswein. This low alcohol Riesling has a fresh and minerally nose. This wine is elegance personified with a rich texture backed by limey structure and balance. Really superb Riesling this.

H. Dönnhoff:
A Nahe estate - and one of the top performers. Not many estates outside the Mosel receive as much attention as those within it, but if there are any exceptions then perhaps Dönnhoff is one. A Nahe estate - and one of the top performers. Not many estates outside the Mosel receive as much attention as those within it, but if there are any exceptions then perhaps Dönnhoff is one. The estate, which is over 12 hectares in size, has been in the Dönnhoff family since 1750, and is currently run by Helmut Dönnhoff. The Dönnhoffs own vines in only the top vineyards of the Nahe Valley. These vineyards are sited in several nearby villages, namely Niederhäuser (Hermannshöhle), Oberhauser (Brucke), Schloßböckelheimer (Felsenberg and Kupfergrube), and Norheimer (Kirschheck and Dellchen). The vineyards are principally slate or volcanic soil, and are planted with Riesling and also some Burgundian varieties. Read less

Sublime aromas of cling peach, passion fruit and wild herbs. The rich depth of velvety passion fruit is enlivened by an elegant acid backbone that gives the wine poise. The aristocratic finish features excellent length.

This is elegant and unctuous, dripping with supple baked apple, ripe pear and vanilla flavors that are bracketed by lots of cream. Glazed citrus and coconut milk notes mark the broad finish. Drink now through 2025.

Dönnhoff's Rieslings are pristine, lacy and breathtakingly beautiful. This off-dry Kabinett has an abundance of mineral and stone fruit; a perfect introduction to the wines of this estate.

Amongst the four brilliant Spätlesen that I tasted in 2009 from Helmut Dönnhoff, the Hermannshöhle is the pick of the litter this year. The wine offers up a brilliantly crystalline bouquet of sweet grapefruit, orange, a touch of wild yeasts, simply stunning minerality, citrus zest, dried flowers and just a brief glimpse of the petrol to come with bottle age. On the palate the wine is deep, medium-full and extremely long and dancing, with a great core, laser-like focus and magical length and grip on the seamless and utterly refined finish. A great, great wine. 2015-2040. View from the Cellar, March-April 2010 Issue 26 Part One, John Gilman

Effusively perfumed with cherry blossom, lily, and honeysuckle, Donnhoffrsquo;s 2009 Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spatlese comes to the palate dripping with ripe Persian melon and packing the luscious, cooling refreshment of a flower- and herb-infused lime sorbet. Subtly seductive creaminess, wafting florality, and almost weightless buoyancy are allied to an uncanny balance of residual sugar, acids, and dry extract that results in a supportive yet in no way obvious sense of sweetness, and this finishes on an almost endlessly shimmering interplay of crystalline and saliva-inducing saline mineral notes with heady flowers and succulent fresh fruits. Anticipate at least the better part of two decadersquo;s seduction.
