Dönnhoff H. Riesling Spätlese Nahe Norheimer Dellchen 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

"Fresh, elegant and backed by a lively structure, this riesling balances its fruit and acidity deftly, with a lingering finish. Peach and mineral are the main notes, with an underlying citrus tone...93." WS 3/05

H. Dönnhoff:
A Nahe estate - and one of the top performers. Not many estates outside the Mosel receive as much attention as those within it, but if there are any exceptions then perhaps Dönnhoff is one. A Nahe estate - and one of the top performers. Not many estates outside the Mosel receive as much attention as those within it, but if there are any exceptions then perhaps Dönnhoff is one. The estate, which is over 12 hectares in size, has been in the Dönnhoff family since 1750, and is currently run by Helmut Dönnhoff. The Dönnhoffs own vines in only the top vineyards of the Nahe Valley. These vineyards are sited in several nearby villages, namely Niederhäuser (Hermannshöhle), Oberhauser (Brucke), Schloßböckelheimer (Felsenberg and Kupfergrube), and Norheimer (Kirschheck and Dellchen). The vineyards are principally slate or volcanic soil, and are planted with Riesling and also some Burgundian varieties. Read less

Still quite fresh with lots of sweet fruit flavors characteristic of the vintage, but this is pretty simple. Peak drinking window: 2005-2013.

Very light and slightly alcoholic nose with a nice powdered gravel top note and some earthy apple and apple blossom notes accenting a core of light apricot fruit. This smells surprisingly tight and nervous. Lightly if obviously sweet in the mouth, this has plenty of acidity keeping things juicy and a nice light accent note of green apple with a flicker of minerality. A bit plump, but this is drinking very well today for a simple quaffer. 85pts

Aromas of kirsch, fresh nectarine and honey. Refined and riveting interplay of pit fruits and citrus on a plate of wet stone. Very ripe and stuffed with extract yet not in the least overweight. The finish displays rapier penetration of crystal-clear fruit and mineral.
