Dönnhoff H. Riesling Auslese Nahe Norheimer Dellchen 2003

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Undoubtedly the finest 2003 Auslese I tasted is Douml;nnhoffrsquo;s majestic 2003 Riesling Auslese Norheimer Dellchen. Its immensely complex aromas reveals a plethora of fresh herbs, minerals, slate, and apples. On the palate, this wine reveals a depth of stupendous proportions. Powerful, yet refined, it has the ethereal qualitites that mark this brilliant winemakerrsquo;s best cuveacute;es. Combining the vintagersquo;s sensual nature with exquisite precision and refinement, this gem displays crystalline minerals enrobed in red berries whose effects linger throughout its long, sublime finish. Wow! Projected maturity: 2007ndash;2030.

H. Dönnhoff:
A Nahe estate - and one of the top performers. Not many estates outside the Mosel receive as much attention as those within it, but if there are any exceptions then perhaps Dönnhoff is one. The estate, which is over 12 hectares in size, has been in the Dönnhoff family since 1750, and is currently run by Helmut Dönnhoff. The Dönnhoffs own vines in only the top vineyards of the Nahe Valley. These vineyards are sited in several nearby villages, namely Niederhäuser (Hermannshöhle), Oberhauser (Brucke), Schloßböckelheimer (Felsenberg and Kupfergrube), and Norheimer (Kirschheck and Dellchen). The vineyards are principally slate or volcanic soil, and are planted with Riesling and also some Burgundian varieties. Read less

This expressive auslese provides a glimpse into the future. Firm and ripe, with red berry, vanilla, citrus and mineral flavors, it merely hints at its charms. Balanced and long; give it a few years to open. Best from 2007 through 2020.

Fiery aromatic notes of distilled berries and smoked meat. An intensely concentrated, compact mass of citrus and berries on the palate; embryonic at present but feeds a dynamic dance of striking finishing flavors. This should evolve for years as a great monument to its site.
