Food Pairings for Donnafugata Vigna di Gabri Contessa Entellina DOC
The Rallo family have been involved in wine production in Marsala for over 150 years, but were one of the first families to move into the production of high quality table wine when sales of Marsala started to decline. They have two estates in Sicily: 260 hectares at Contessa Entellina in the hills east of Marsala; and 68 hectares on the island of Pantelleria. Their winery in Marsala is ultra modern, and serves to preserve the flavours obtained in the vineyard. ‘Vigna di Gabri’ bears the name of Gabriella, who wanted to create it and oversaw its development. She believed in its engrossing fragrance of Ansonica. The new label created for the 2004 vintage, shows the bond of Gabriella with her land and the Ansonica, one of Sicily’s oldest native white grapes. First vintage: 1987. The terrain is of medium consistency and the vines are trained on a counter-espalier system and spur pruned. Average planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare. This wine highlights the special characteristics of the Ansonica variety. The intense, elegant aromas range from apples to acacia and more complex scents of a salty or mineral cast. A structured, mouth-filling flavour that is fresh and sapid with a lingering finish.
