The Rallo family have been involved in wine production in Marsala for over 150 years, but were one of the first families to move into the production of high quality table wine when sales of Marsala started to decline. They have two estates in Sicily: 260 hectares at Contessa Entellina in the hills east of Marsala; and 68 hectares on the island of Pantelleria. Their winery in Marsala is ultra modern, and serves to preserve the flavours obtained in the vineyard. Continuing with the Persian storytelling theme, the label depicts the palace at Santa Margherita Belice to which Queen Maria Carolina fled, and was also the favourite residence of Tomasi di Lampedusi, author of ‘The Leopard’. Mille e Una Notte is made from Nero d’Avola and 10% local red grapes such as Pericone and Nerello Cappuccio. The vines are trained using a counter-espalier system and spur pruned, with average density of 5,000 plants per hectare. The wine is bright, deep ruby red in colour with perfumes of mature, sweet fruit without any hint of cooked fruit. Powerful and full-bodied on the palate, with blackberries, spicy plums and a touch of tobacco balanced by robust tannins and a spicy oak character. Long and powerful to the finish.
Notes: In mostly new French oak barrels for a period of 15-16 months and then for 30 months in bottle.
