Donnafugata Ben Rye Sweet Italy Sicilia White 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Enthusiast Review Rated 93 EDITORS CHOICE The folks at Donnafugata, one of Sicily's most dynamic wineries, have inaugurated a new winery on the volcanic island of Pantelleria fully dedicated to the production of their precious Ben Ry passito. The amber-colored wine is vibrant, brilliant and its purity of aromas is outstanding. Dried figs, apricot, honey, almond and fragrant herbs are delivered in thick, generous layers. Tingly acidity cleans the palate and powers a long, delectable finish. Made from sun-dried Zibibbo grapes, this wine is the best of its kind and can be paired with sugary treats or, better yet, with Stilton blue cheese or gorgonzola. Wine Tasting Notes 100% Zibibbo (Moscato d Alessandria) The wine displays its extraordinary personality and depth initially with its bright amber yellow color. After the first, intense notes of apricot and peaches, the bouquet offers sweet sensation of dried figs, honey, herbs and mineral notes. The wine is impressive on the palate with its outstanding complexity due to a fusing of sweetness, sapidity and softness. A prolonged finish.

Convinced that it is always necessary to be open to change in order to grow and improve, Giacomo Rallo and his wife, Gabriella, launched a new production project in 1983: Donnafugata. Their adventure took wing from the family’s historic cellars in Marsala and the vineyards at Contessa Entellina in the heart of western Sicily and soared as far as the island of Pantelleria. Their children, José and Antonio, joined them and the house accelerated its march along the path of Extreme Quality: a project that focused on attention to detail, which clears the way for entrepreneurial decisions that ever more advanced objectives. As for the future, the young Gabriella and Ferdinando are already being “fully immersed” in the family’s activities Read less

Viscous peachy and apricot syrup on the nose and mid-palate; finishes very clean and bright, acidic.

Could not wait to try this beautiful dessert wine from the small island off of Sicily. I wasn't disappointed but felt it a little sweeter than I wanted. Still a great Passito.

Citrus fruits and honey. Nice mineral notes on the nose, enriched by tones of camomile and mallow. Tasted en primeur, it already showed great elegance and pleasant sapidity.

Not too thick - rich, sweet but balanced dessert wine. We tasted a lot of orange peel along with honey and apricot.

Hailing from the volcanic island of Pantelleria on the southern coast of Sicily, where winds are so strong that the grapes dry and shrivel, comes this unctuous delicacy. Viscous and amber in color, the wine gives spicy orange peel notes on the nose, which culminate in an intense and almost fortified quality on the palate.

94 Points Stephen Tanzer. `Golden yellow with a bright orange tinge. Explosive highly perfumed aromas of ripe apricot peach citrus fruits cinnamon and pepper. Pure and clean with impressive depth to the ripe citrus and peach flavors. An undercurrent of tropical fruits contributes volume and flesh. The concentrated very long finish throws off notes of lavender and acacia honey. Perhaps the best ever Ben Rye amazingly intense yet elegant and impeccably balanced.Depending on the vintage it is made up of grapes from 3 to 11 vineyards located in different sub-zones on the island of Pantelleria.`
