Donkey and Goat Chardonnay Chalone 2008

External Review by Astor Wines & Spirits:

A medium-bodied white wine that will not win prizes for clarity and typicity, but will delight any Burgundian-style chardonnay fan, especially when placed next to oysters or sushi. Fruit for this wine comes from the Brosseau vineyard, in the famed Chalone appellation. The vines are grown at an elevation of 1600 feet in pure limestone. This creates an extremely layered Chardonnay, with slightly oxidative notes of poached pear, apple, and wet stone. Tracey and Jared Brandt have come up with a 100% natural and innovative method to balance acidity in their final product. They pick unripe grapes early in the season, press and ferment this highly acidic juice, which is then blended into the final wines from the ripe grapes picked at harvest.
