Don Ventura Vina Caneiro 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Grown on steep rocky terraces built by the Romans, this medium-bodied wine is lively and juicy showing distinct notes of smoke, charred red cherry fruit, and tart red currant. Super fresh and expressive, this great Spanish bottling is stainless steel fermented and sees no oak.

This is always a treat and while i don't see the similarity with Cab Franc that some folks claim I do see a kinship with Loire Valley reds. This is crisp and mineral up front with crunchy astringent red fruits on the palate and a lashing of lip smacking acidity. The tannins are small but firm giving the wine nice cut on the backend and adding a spicy layer to the moderately long finish. Very aromatic in the mouth and wonderfully sapid. 91pts

An elegant example of the Mencía grape that is reminiscent of a juicy cru Beaujolais. With grapey ease, lithe fruit, and great acidity, this cool-climate treat might change your perception of Spanish wines.
