To Don Sebastiani and Sons, family is clearly an important aspect of winemaking. While Don Sebastiani and Sons wasn’t founded until 2001, Samuele Sebastiani created a winery in 1904, and started growing the company, as well as the town of Sonoma. Over the years, the winery changed hands many times, but it always stayed within the family. By 2000, the winery was producing eight million cases of wine a year. However, at that time, Don Sebastiani sold many of the assets and kept only the family brand and the Sonoma winery and vineyards. Though he stepped down as CEO and Chairman in 2000, that wasn’t the end for him. In 2001, he and his sons, Donny and August, founded Don Sebastiani and Sons, eventually growing production back up to two million cases annually. Today, Greg Kitchens and Michelle McClendon, winemakers for Don Sebastiani and Sons, strive to produce high-end wine at affordable prices. They don’t just source grapes from California - they’ve also formed partnerships to create Australian and Chilean blends, further expanding the company’s reach and complexity. Read less

A Bordeaux-style Cabernet that shows off a different side of Napa Valley.

An elegant, Bordeaux-styled Cabernet from Napa Valley, B Side is a great alternative to the thick and fruity Cabs that generally come from this area. Deep, spicy, herbal flavors abound, such as tobacco, paprika, black pepper and eucalyptus, overlaid with soft red and black fruit flavors. Great structure; this is one for the cellar if you can restrain yourself from drinking it now!

Holds its own in a tasting of Napa Cabs that cost, three, four, even five times as much. Made with a drop of Petite Sirah, it's dry, firmly tannic and complex, with black currant, beef jerky, miso, pepper spice and smoky oak flavors. Best now and for a couple years.

Just like Marlena Shawrsquo;s ldquo;California Soul, rdquo; The Righteous Brothersrsquo; ldquo;Unchained Melody, rdquo; Cliff Noblesrsquo; ldquo; The Horserdquo; or even (inexplicably) Booker T. amp; the MGrsquo;s classic instrumental ldquo;Green Onions, rdquo; this soulful wine started life as a B-side. You will find when you pour yourself a glass, however, that it drinks more like a double A-sidehellip; a smash hit on the nose and the palate. Opaque ruby in color. You are greeted by aromas of cassis and pencil shavings with hints of black pepper and wild blueberry, lent possibly by the small amount of Petite Sirah added to the wine. The palate contains flavors of plum and ripe dark cherry with a mildly oaky finish and chewy tannins. Pair with peppercorn crusted lamb shanks with orange chutney and wild mushroom risotto. Drink now. Can you dig it?
