Don & Sons Pinot Noir Sono 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

Our 2011 Pinot Noir invites you in with aromas of strawberry, raspberry and cranberry dusted with subtle notes of dark chocolate, purple basil and walnuts. This silky, medium-bodied wine leads with vibrant avors of red raspberry and pomegranate seed. Wonderfully earthy undertones reminiscent of Shitake mushrooms follow, while hints of caraway seeds and cedar add further complexity to the smooth lingering nish.

To Don Sebastiani and Sons, family is clearly an important aspect of winemaking. While Don Sebastiani and Sons wasn’t founded until 2001, Samuele Sebastiani created a winery in 1904, and started growing the company, as well as the town of Sonoma. Over the years, the winery changed hands many times, but it always stayed within the family. By 2000, the winery was producing eight million cases of wine a year. However, at that time, Don Sebastiani sold many of the assets and kept only the family brand and the Sonoma winery and vineyards. Though he stepped down as CEO and Chairman in 2000, that wasn’t the end for him. In 2001, he and his sons, Donny and August, founded Don Sebastiani and Sons, eventually growing production back up to two million cases annually. Today, Greg Kitchens and Michelle McClendon, winemakers for Don Sebastiani and Sons, strive to produce high-end wine at affordable prices. They don’t just source grapes from California - they’ve also formed partnerships to create Australian and Chilean blends, further expanding the company’s reach and complexity. Read less

Tight on the nose and vaguely chalky early on with emerging notes of used briarwood pipe, beetroot and strawberry rhubarb pie. Rather well behaved in the mouth, this shows nice restraint to the medicinal-toned black cherry and dusty beetroot flavors. There's a bit of mineral that pops on the back end, along with hints of strawberry pie and dried herbs that gain a bit of root beer on the moderately long and very gently spicy finish. There's a nice purity to this. The fruit flavor profile is not typical Pinot, being more minty and medicinal, but it is well presented. 88pts

Apple, pomegranate, smoke, green tea and lightly toasted oak great the nose. On entry this has a touch of sweetness but that is quickly replaced with the subtle but chunky flavors of red raspberry. This is simple but clean with good flavors that while note terrible varietal are reasonably fun to drink with a touch of tannin that adds length to the finish 84pts.

Simple, one dimensional Pinot from Chile. Touches of smoke and berries, with tannins on the finish.

Been buying this regularly lately as I think the price is right. A little darker & heavier than other pinots, but real slick. A variety of berry flavors; blueberry, strawberry and rasberry come to mind with a lingering vanilla finish.

Consistently a good wine. Rolls around in the mouth wonderfully. Smoky and earthy. And rich berry.

Aromas of red raspberry, rose petal, tamarind and notes of cedar unfold from this dazzling ruby-hued Pinot Noir. Fresh flavors of crushed berries and plum gradually give way to a bright finish with hints of black walnut and cherry.
