Dominus Wines Estate Red Napa Valley Methuselah In Wood Box 1991

Winemaker's Notes:

Winery: dominus estate Style: Red Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend Region: Napa Very saturated dark red-ruby. Youthful, supercomplex aromas of plum liqueur, currant, brown spices, leather and chocolate, plus an ineffable animal/vegetal/mineral element. Wonderful penetrating sweetness in the mouth; dense, thick, very intensely flavored and pungent. Sharply delineated. Perhaps not quite the sheer size of the '94. Finishes extremely long and focused, with fine tannins and a note of superripeness.

Dominus Estate is owned by Christian Moueix from Libourne, France. His goal, supported by the team at the winery, is to produce great wine representing the unique terroir of the Napanook vineyard. Our philosophy is very traditional—that is, in order to produce great wine we need the best possible grapes. Therefore, we concentrate our efforts in the vineyard. The vines are meticulously manicured—we believe in crop-thinning, "nettoyage," washing the grapes, and other labor-intensive activities. During each visit to California, Christian Moueix spends most of his time in the vineyard, not only because he loves it, but also to better understand the natural expression of the vintage. Following the maturation of the clusters allows us to harvest the grapes under the best conditions. When the fruit enters the cellar after harvest, it follows a natural process of fermentation with few interventions. Our approach is that of a minimalist's. Following fermentation, the wine is blended in a manner that expresses the natural qualities of the fruit, not forced into a style with preconceived notions. Read less

Clean and pure on the nose with a nice edge of vegetal funk up front and background notes of smoke and oak all over a very cassis driven core. This is decidedly varietal on the nose but note very California. In the mouth this is pretty soft with some fairly dry tannins still making their presence known. The fruit is soft and subtle with some dark, dried fruit notes that lead to a cinnamonny finish. Overall this promised more than it delivered and was rather dry and graceless. I have had better bottles of this, but they were all in the past. My last experience with this unfortunately mirrored this one. 84pts

just a great bottle of wine. classic nose of tobacco, cassis and leather. tons of fruit, taking it almost to the edge of overdone, but it brings it back from the edge with perfect balance. fantastic.

In a blind tasting, both the 1990 and 1991 wines were identified as being French by all eight tasters. I pulled these wines from my cellar to insert as ringers, so I was particularly miffed at not getting their origin correct. The 1991 is the finest ... Robert Parker. A Proprietary Blend wine from California in USA. 1991 Dominus Proprietary Red Wine 1500ml
