What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

Winemakers Notes

"The elegant, dark plum/purple/garnet-colored 2004 Dominus exhibits a big, sweet, cedary, roasted herb, mocha, black cherry liqueur, black currant, and earth-scented perfume. Medium to full-bodied with silky tannin as well as a luscious mouthfeel and finish, it should be more accessible in its youth than many of its predecessors, but easily last for two decades. Score: 94. —Robert Parker." The six pack is available in a wooden box.

Rich and balanced like a $100 bottle should be. One of the best California can offer.

Rating: 91(+?) - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 132, May/June 2007 ($115) Deep red-ruby. Deep but reticent aromas of dark raspberry, cocoa powder, hot rocks and minerals, with notes of menthol and wintermint. Very firmly built and backward, conveying a tightly coiled spring for a 2004, and an almost Saint-Estephe-like menthol austerity. Though a bit tough and youthfully green, this firmly structured wine is quite aromatic on the back and opened nicely with aeration. Give this a lot of time in the decanter if you plan to open a bottle anytime soon.

It seems I try this label only once or twice a year, but I have found a lot to like in the 2004 recently. It has a muscular weight to the nose with a seductively concentrated cedar, currant and spice that melds into the mocha and sweet cherry found on the front of the palate, leading into finely-wrought flavors of black currant, delicate sandalwood and a soft finish

Christian Moueix fell in love with the Napa Valley and its wines while studying at U.C. Davis in 1968 and 1969. After many years of searching for the ideal vineyard location, in 1982 he entered into a joint venture with Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, John Daniel's two daughters. This was the birth of Dominus, and its first vintage was harvested in 1983. Since then, Christian Moueix has worked to restore the unique character of the original vineyard. Christian Moueix began his career in Pomerol, where merlot is the dominant varietal grown. At Dominus Estate, the essential grape varietal is cabernet read more...
