Dominus 1994

Winemaker's Notes:

Dominus 1994 is the first vintage produced by the Dominus Estate Corporation (wholly owned by Christian Moueix), and is made solely from grapes grown on the historic Napanook Vineyard in Yountville, California. Comparable in quality to the 1991 vintage, the 1994 vintage is a classic Dominus wine. The final blend represents exactly the percentage of the varietals planted in the vineyard. It is without a doubt one of the great Dominus wines produced. Vintage Summary The 1994 growing season was the longest on record at the Napanook Vineyard since Christian Moueix began farming it in 1982: 186 days between budbreak and harvest. Dry, with moderate temperatures, this long, mild season allowed the fruit to develop to full, balanced maturity. Beginning date of harvest: 09/19/1994 Ending date of harvest: 10/21/1994 Average days of Cuvaison: 18 days Blend: 72% Cabernet Sauvignon 12% Merlot 11% Cabernet Franc 5% Petit Verdot Barrel regime: 16 months in French oak barrels — hand racked every three months Percentage of new oak: 40%

Dominus Estate is owned by Christian Moueix from Libourne, France. His goal, supported by the team at the winery, is to produce great wine representing the unique terroir of the Napanook vineyard. Our philosophy is very traditional—that is, in order to produce great wine we need the best possible grapes. Therefore, we concentrate our efforts in the vineyard. The vines are meticulously manicured—we believe in crop-thinning, "nettoyage," washing the grapes, and other labor-intensive activities. During each visit to California, Christian Moueix spends most of his time in the vineyard, not only because he loves it, but also to better understand the natural expression of the vintage. Following the maturation of the clusters allows us to harvest the grapes under the best conditions. When the fruit enters the cellar after harvest, it follows a natural process of fermentation with few interventions. Our approach is that of a minimalist's. Following fermentation, the wine is blended in a manner that expresses the natural qualities of the fruit, not forced into a style with preconceived notions. Read less

My 7th place wine/Groups 7th place wine Oaky and smoky on the nose with notes of chipotle, plums, minerals and an earthy, leathery, manure tinged note of decomp. Fairly high acid on the attack followed by a rather aggressive midpalate with alcoholic heat and stern tannins leading to the finish which had some nice black fruit but the tannins remained astringent. The complexity on the nose was interesting and more engaging than most of the wines but the palate was just out of balance. 86pts
