Had this at La Cave du Vin in Cleveland Heights - amazing wine! Aromas that would make you think twice about it - barn yard and earth. Deliciously earthy and fruity on the palate.

A complex wine with noticeable terroir made from the Mencia grape in Bierzo. A great front end - with lead pencil and leather, but loses a bit in the mid-palate. 60 year-old vines grown at almost 3000 feet above sea level delivered only about one cluster per plant! A good effort but at $30 probably not great value.

This 100% unoaked Mencia, made especially for the U.S. market, is a terrific buy. With lovely aromatics, fruit and little tannin, it has a Beaujolais-like style and sensibility, but with more substance.

(Dominio de Tares 'Bembibre' 2002) 'Lush on the nose, with wild game, smoke, and blackberry filling every void. Almost Syrah-like in its weight, more so than the other Mencia wines that are making a statement. Which only means that it's chewy, chocolaty, and creamy... 91 points'---Michael Schachner, The Wine Enthusiast, June 2005(Dominio de Tares 'Bembibre' 2002) 'From select vineyard plots of almost 100-year-old vines, the licorice, mineral intensity of this red inspires oohs and aahs with every sip.'---Leslie Sbrocco, 'Spain Reigns,' The San Francisco Chronicle, February 10, 2005(Dominio de Tares Bembibre Bierzo 2002) 'Deep ruby-red. Black raspberry, black cherry, mint, herbs and roasted oak on the nose. Sweet, dense and a bit youthfully reduced, with round, spicy flavors of blackberry, coffee, minerals and herbs. At once serious and pretty. Finishes persistent and ripely tannic, with cool notes of menthol and herbs. A very successful wine for this cool vintage. 89 Points'---Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, September/October 2004(Dominio de Tares, Bembibre 2002) - 'Rich and powerful, yet perfectly balanced and focused. Black fruit flavors are supported by toast and coffee notes from oak; muscular tannins give structure without obtrusiveness. Though elegant, it has enough power to reward cellaring. 93 Points' --- Thomas Matthews, The Wine Spectator Weekly, September 23, 2004

The 2005 Baltos Mencia comes from a less steep terroir and is aged in oak for 6 months. This purple-colored effort exhibits an attractive bouquet of minerals, earth, black cherry and raspberry. This is followed by a medium-bodied wine with concentrat... Robert Parker. A Mencia wine from Bierzo in Spain. 2005 Dominio de Tares Baltos 750ml

Tasting Notes:

On the nose, powerful aromas of red berries, specifically raspberries and cherries, and plum. Floral hints, mixed with tobacco are evident as well. It is very well-structured on the palate with impeccable balance. A rich, elegant, long finish expresses excellent acidity. Toasted notes of exotic spices linger on the tongue.
