Dominio de Tares Bembibre Mencia Spain Bierzo Dominio de Tares Spain 2004

Member Review by ryanopaz:

Very dark adn inky in color. The nose at first is very tight and concentrated with big notes of black pepper and rich earth. Slowly and after much time this begins to turn to dark berries, chocolate, clove, anise and more. In the mouth this is a big wine with hits of spice and tannin that seems to leave my tongue reeling. With time though this gives way to big fruit flavors and after much decanting the tannins reveal a nice acidity behind them with pure cherry and rapberry fruit. Chocolate, oak, and earthiness remain, and while this is a large mouthfull of wine it really develops with enough air into something more elegant that I would have supposed. 4/5 [NR]

New Cepas Viejas, new technology, knowledge and passion for the wine is the presentation card of Dominio de Tares. Far away from foreigner varieties and focusing our efforts in the native Mencía and Godello varieties, we have brought out surprising wines because of their equilibrium and elegance; wines that cradled in noble woods fulfil our satisfaction. The tendering of an ancient vineyard, with vines rooted in the heart of the Bierzo; the manual harvest, cluster by cluster; and the time passing by the juice sleeping in French and American barrels, confer our wines with unique traits in the Spanish wine panorama. Our working philosophy, concentrating in the continuous effort to become better; and the commitment to our clients and consumers sums up the soul of this winery, founded in the year 2000. Founded only in 2000, Dominio de Tares was started by a group of young individuals from Bierzo, only one of whom, Amancio Fernandez, a highly acclaimed winemaker, was previously involved in wine. Despite the seeming lack of experience, they have become one of the region's leading producers. Their focus is on making wine from old vine Mencia grown high in the hills. Producing 500,000 bottles annually from 200 acres (75 acres of their own vineyards, and 125 acres leased), they are one of the largest in the region. Pedro Gonzalez replaced Fernandez as technical director (winemaker) two years ago. Read less
