96 points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): The 2004 Llanos del Almendro is from what the estate believes is their finest parcel. From 60+-year-old (mostly grafted) vines, the Tempranillo fruit is aged for 21 months in French barriques of which 66% are new. Opaque purple in color, with a more open and expressive nose of minerals, smoked meat, and blue and black fruits, this full-bodied wine is mouth-filling and rich. In a blind tasting it could easily pass for a great Pauillac in its combination of power and elegance. Kudos to Dominio Atauta!
One of the principle characteristics of Atauta is the great height of the vineyard situated at 950 to 1,000 metres above sea-level which allows maturing to lake place more slowly. During the weeks prior to the harvest, the temperature change between day and night of up to 25 degrees C gives a greater range of aromas with more character. The Tinto Pino variety of grape predominates as the Tcmpranillo in the Ribera del Duero is known.

Located on the far eastern edge of the Ribera Del Duero, the Dominio de Atauta is named after the town with the same name. Here, in a canyon, pre-Phylloxera Tempranillo vines are still found and French winemaker Bertrand Sourdais creates a complex and powerful red. Aromas of wild herbs, cured meat, black fruit, and tobacco will waft from the glass.

This is the newest project from the makers of Atauta. Made from 100% Tinto Fino (tempranillo), this is a wine with incredible balance and restraint. Atalayas is made from grapes around Atauta, showing blackberry and dusty tannins, yet more approachable in its youth.
