Dominio de Atauta 2008
"#88 Wine Spectator's Top 100 from 2012...Exuberant flavors of currant, blackberry, cola and licorice mingle in this racy red, which has light, firm tannins and vibrant acidity, with plenty of fruit to balance the evident oak. A lively modern style...92" WS 5/12 "The entry-level offering is the 2008 Dominio de Atauta, aged in 40% new French oak for 18 months before bottling without filtration (as are each of these wines). It delivers an inviting nose of earthy minerality, wood smoke, and blackberry leading to an elegant expression of Tinto Fino with impressive depth and concentration. It can be approached now but will evolve for several years...91+" WA 07/11 "Bright ruby. Lively, perfumed aromas of black raspberry, potpourri and spicy oak. Sweet, focused and sappy, with fresh cherry and raspberry flavors. Shows very good balance and energy, and a mounting floral quality that reminded me of pinot noir. The very long finish features fine-grained tannins and lingering spiciness....91" IWC 09/11
One of the principle characteristics of Atauta is the great height of the vineyard situated at 950 to 1,000 metres above sea-level which allows maturing to lake place more slowly. During the weeks prior to the harvest, the temperature change between day and night of up to 25 degrees C gives a greater range of aromas with more character. The Tinto Pino variety of grape predominates as the Tcmpranillo in the Ribera del Duero is known.
