Dominio Buenavista Veleta Nolados 2008

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Aggressive bitter herb and root notes that recall Cab Franc, earthy, sassafras, really feral on the nose with notes of game, dried flowers, and apricot liqueur Rich yet fairly soft with medicinal tinged red cherry fruit. There’s a lot of subtle detail here. The fruit is quite intense yet balanced and the herbal, medicinal, cocoa and spice tones are subtle and well integrated. Nice ripe tannins, good integrated acidity, a nice intensity of slightly bitter red cherry on the moderately long finish with a mineral note on the finale. A distinctive blend that is slightly assertive but perfectly scaled. Lovely wine 91pts

Jammy fruits greet the nose then a fine vegetal tone of ripe Cabernet franc, light chili notes and interesting nuances of baking clay and balsamic woods join in. Light and elegant in the mouth, the fruit is jewel like with fine precision and a mouth cleansing quality. Really fine balance to the polished tannins and ripe acidity that supports dark cherry fruit that is dusted with bitter cocoa and almond. The finish has good length and continues the bitter/sweet tension found in the mouth. The fruit here is really lovely and faceted, gem like. 91pts

The nose is intensely earthy and barrel-drive, with bright spicy notes. The attack is dry and tannic, and approaches modestly to deliver good black fruits to the palate. The whole shape of the wine is cavernous, and it sticks around for good length.

Solid aroma of wood, pepper, herbs, dark berries, a bit of lemon, chili peppers, and dark chocolate. The mouth is moderately acidic and tannic, feels a little bit young. Very complex, strong, and fun to drink. Would go well with pork tenderloin.

dark aromas, layers of black currants, black plums, blackberry, dark cocoa, lots od dark chocolate and dark fruit, a little herbal and some spice, long length and enriching body

Tanzer IWC July 2006 2005 Bodega Dominio Buenavista/Veleta Wines Noladas Vino de la Tierra Contraviesa Alpujarra ($14; a blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and tempranillo) Inky ruby. Vanilla-accented kirsch and blackberry on the nose, with complicating cracked pepper and violet qualities. Sweet dark berry flavors veer toward jammy but are firmed by dusty tannins. Finishes with clinging dark fruit flavors and good spicy persistence. 88
