Domenico Clerico Barolo Pajana 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

The chocolate woody nose is dark and slightly stewy with simple, sweet wood and vanilla aromas. This is a bit thick on entry, blocky with less underlying fruit, and a lot of wood tannin here, packed with tannins in fact. Fairly compact in the mouth with small red fruits and a little tobacco that is having a tough time competing with all the wood. 87pts

Woody on the nose with jammy fruit underlaid with a rather intense tarry note. With airing this reveals a touch of raw wood, green coffee that gains prominence taking on a chlorine quality. In the mouth this is fairly thick and rich with an extracted feel delivering nice mineral accented fruit on the mid-palate and through the firm, moderately long finish. With air this does become a bit more compact and dull with a lean core and a heavy, drying, extracted finish. 85pts

The nose showed dusty cherry and cranberry with rose petals and slight sour cream note. On the palate I found velvety red fruit leading to a sweet mid-palate with cinnamon and dark chocolate. This bottle showed underwhelming at first but with a good amount of time in glass it truly filled out and revealed multiple layers that weren’t seen in my initial tasting notes.

The Pajana showed very expressive on the nose with sour red fruit, primarily cranberry, and floral notes with lipstick, oak and leather. The palate was at first jammy, with red fruits but turned sour, and mouth-watering as cedar, spice and dark, dark chocolate came forward. This wine showed intense density of fruit against a large dollop of mouth-watering acidity and, hidden beneath all of this, a wall of tannin. Give it another four or five years and I think it may tame itself into something wonderful.

A solid wine for the vintage with pretty fruit such as cherry and plum as well as a light minerality. Full body with chewy tannins and a polished finish. Well-crafted young wine. Better in 2017. James Suckling.

Good medium red. Less expressive on the nose than the Briccotto hinting at ripe musky plum black raspberry menthol and tobacco. Then smooth and sweet in the mouth but with terrific energy keeping the red fruit and tobacco flavors fresh and primary. Sweeter and more elegant in style than the 2009 but this fine-grained firmly tannic wine really shut down in the glass. Outstanding potential here. 94+ Stephen Tanzers IWC.

The 2007 Barolo Ciabot Mentin is one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted at this address. Deep, sensual layers of fruit flow from the glass as this full-throttle, intense Barolo reveals its profound, breathtaking personality. The 2007 shows tons... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. The 2007 Arte (90% Nebbiolo, 10% Barbera) is a dark, sumptuous beauty endowed with layers of blackberries, sweet spices, and minerals. Though still rather firm, the wine possesses superb balance and a long, impeccable finish. Espresso, menthol, licor... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. 90% nebbiolo and 10% barbera; aged in 90% new barriques Good deep red-ruby. Captivating aromas of raspberry wild rose tobacco and nutty vanillin oak. Quite sweet for this wine at Clerico but with lovely vinosity and flavor intensity. Bigger than usual for Arte but still essentially a medium-bodied blend. Finishes with powerful but sweet tannins.
