- matte, dense, and even color - lovely nose of cherries in alcohol, tar, sottobosco, awith a bit of char and oak, sandlewood, leather - fairly soft and rich at first, juicy and astringent, dense and chewy, very earthy, funghi, well structured, bit shy on the mid-palate, fairly brawny with jammy and dark fruits, bit of leather, at 5 hours nose is really impressive with sure some spicy oak notes but the level of tobacco, earth, menthol, and roast cherry fully compensate, in the mouth chewy cherry fruit, perhaps just a smidge dried out, nice balance of grape and wood tannins, a bit more spicy oak than I read more...usually like but this is raucus and interesting. This is the best showing for a Clerico wine for me. I’ve tried all vintages of the CMG since the 82 and this comes closest to what I want from Barolo. Just entering it’s plateau, I hope the wood tannin/oaky spice here melts away in rhythm with the other components of the wine. It’s already excellent but potential for improvement is certainly there.
