Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner Smaragd 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

Mittellanger Abgang.

Domäne Wachau is one of Austria’s most established, yet most innovative wineries. The new team that was put in charge five years ago is headed by Roman Horvath, Austria’s second Master of Wine and Heinz Frischengruber, a young enologist with impressive international experience. In the capable hands of the dynamic team, Domäne Wachau has established itself in the ranks of Austria’s leading wineries. Combining fresh ideas, youthful personality and international experience, the team brings a new energy to the historic winery and makes the future look brighter than ever. Roman Horvath and Heinz Frischengruber are convinced that great wine is not made in the cellar but in the vineyards. Improving the quality of the grapes is the main focus for continued improvement of the wines. To achieve this goal, the cooperative initiated a grading system for their member’s vineyards. Throughout the vegetation period the vineyards are observed and graded according to high standards set by the Domäne Wachau. With patience and respect towards the members, the new team has achieved what many cooperative wineries aim for: the dedication and commitment of the members who, voluntarily, make every effort to supply their winery with the best possible grape material. While the main attention is paid to grape quality, the work in the cellar is reduced to a necessary minimum. “Working with what the Wachau has to give us” is the first priority of oenologist Heinz Frischengruber. His conscientious and gentle handling of the fruit results in a precisely focused style. The Domane Wachau wines showcase the fruit character and mineral finesse that is the unique personality of the Wachau Valley. Read less

frisse witte wijn met in de afdronk een voller kruidige aanzet wat hem interessant maakt. Eerste slok was even wennen maar daarna lekker. Gegeten met asperges, goede combi.

The nose is pear with a smokey, earthy background. The palate is bright with pinapple and honeydew melon. It is extremely fruit-forward, but it is dry style. Rather than betraying the dryness, the fruit enhances the style by increasing the body. Strong finish that lingers as it fades off. Would recommend this as a inexpensive compromise for people between the dry and sweet styles.

This Grüner Veltliner Terrassen from Domäne Wachau is named after the steep terraces overlooking the Danube where the vines are cultivated. The Federspiel tag is a falconry term and means it is on the second of three levels of alcoholic strength - the top being Smaragd, meaning emerald and referring to the colour of a local lizard. Medium-bodied, it has a lightness and a hint of smokiness with aromatic white pepper on the nose; on the palate there is the refreshing acidity of ripe cox's apples and conference pears. Elegant with good structure and mineral backbone, it also has a slightly herbaceous character that, along with the smokiness, is strangely reminiscent of a Loire Sauvignon. We had it with a very fishy dinner of smoked salmon mousse with rocket followed by coquailles St Jacques and lightly-baked salmon. In truth, it was slightly overwhelmed by the meatiness of the fish and the strong flavours of the salad leaves - a Smaragd would have been better here - and a more appropriate match might perhaps have been a simple white fish, such as plaice or sole. Alternatively, match with light Italian food, such as mozzarella or tortelloni tossed in butter with grated parmagiano and a grind or two of black pepper on top. The 2009 vintage has a number of awards: Decanter magazine: Bronze (2009 vintage) IWC medal: Bronze (2009 vintage) IWSC medal: Silver (2009 vintage)

There's lots of apricot and golden raisin flavors in this medium-bodied white. The firm finish features some buttery notes. Drink now through 2014. 800 cases made. -KM

Medium yellow-green. Inviting nuances of yellow apple, apricot and subtle tobacco on the nose. Apple and vineyard peach flavor are supported by vibrant acidity. A lemon flavor lingers on the finish of this crisp, versatile, food-friendly midweight, which is ideal with delicate fish dishes or grilled vegetables brushed with olive oil. Enjoy now through 2014.
