Domaines Schlumberger les Princes Abbés Pinot Gris 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

The robe is light golden-yellow with light green reflections of good intensity. The disk is bright, limpid and transparent. The wine shows youth. The nose is marked, pleasant, intense and distinguished. We perceive a dominant of complex, crystallized and fruity scents, Mirabelle, Dante plum and honey with a fine smoky touch. The airing reminds and enhances the previous scents and reveals orange blossom and quince. The healthy maturity of the grapes is excellent and provides a clear and distinguished profile. The onset in the mouth is moderately ample and round. The alcohol support is apparent and full-bodied. The wine evolves on a medium of marked vivacity, with a sparkling note. The range of flavours is in line with that of the nose, still dominated by yellow fruits, Dante plum, Mirabelle, quince, honey and this slight yet complex smoky touch. We can taste a delicate bitterness. The finish has a good length, 8 caudalies, and a frank and persistent liveliness. The structure is rich and opulent. From this range, we can see the really beautiful fleshy and soil profile of the grape variety. It can be associated with duck rillettes, a goose foie gras sausage or a sliced poultry with caramelized onions. It goes wonderfully with soft and washed-rind cheeses, such as Livarot.

Reasonable expression of a Pinot Gris varietal. Crisp, medium-dry. Very juicy.

Smoky green melon rind & quince aromas precede mouth-filling flavors of citrus and green apple, viscous, wet stone and steely with good acid and a moderately long finish. Salads, anyone? Safeway has this wine for less than $9. A steal!!

Great wine, hard wine to find in Australia, expect to pay $25-30 for any vintage year but well worth it. And you will not find it at safeway/dan murphys for $9 a bottle! (thats about what Schlumberger gets for it & safeway here would not stock it ever) Its imported exlusivley and in limited amounts by mezzaine wine...

The "Princes Abbés" were the first to sell the wine from Guebwiller and because they took care of the vineyard for one thousand years , Schlumberger pays tribute to them in naming their AOC range Princes Abbés . Originally named Tokay d’Alsace, then Tokay Pinot Gris, the name Pinot Gris was finally established in 2007. Grapes are sourced primarily from vineyards with full southern exposure in Schimberg in the valley of Guebwiller, on a volcanic subsoil. The wine matured on the lees for up to 8 months. Wine Spectator scored it 92 points saying “Finely knit, with a vibrancy to the refined acidity that focuses the flavors of ripe peach, pear, guava and kumquat. Silky in texture, with a core of smoky minerality that pushes through on the lasting finish. Drink now through 2022."

The nose is open with autumn fruits flavors (quince, baked apples) Airing reveals honeyed and crystallized notes. The onset in the mouth is ample but remains fresh. In the middle mouth, a little bit of roundness delicately supported by the acidity.

This dry style of Pinot Gris has a rich character, which allows the spice to come through strongly — the acidity lingering behind. Flavors of tropical fruits are allied to the smooth, ripe finish.

This dry Pinot Gris relies on its richness for power and concentration. From the steep, hillside Schlumberger Vineyards, this is dense and spicy; its acidity and minerality are essential to its character. Age for a year, or drink now.
