Domaine William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru les Preuses 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Pale greenish-yellow. Chalky, iodiney nose hints at wild herbs. Large-scaled and round but quite taut, with strong lemon-limey acidity accentuating the wine's impression of power. Most impressive today on the powerful, saline, chewy finish, which stains the palate with minerality. In a distinctly tightly wound, masculine style.Stephen Tanzer's Intl. Wine Cellar

The history of wine-making in Chablis goes back to 865 AD with the development of vineyards by the monks of Saint-Martin-de-Tours on slopes facing the Serein River that cuts through that village. At that time and for the centuries that followed, the Chablis wine trade grew substantially thanks to the waterways that made it possible to supply Paris from Auxerre. With the French Revolution, estates changed hands but remained successful, and the total vineyard surface area reached 38,000 hectares. The end of the 19th century saw the coming of phylloxera in 1887, which wreaked havoc and reduced the vineyards to almost nothing. It was only at the beginning of the 1960s, when the Chablis vineyard surface area was less than 1,000 hectares, that Chablis wine production took off again with the growth of mechanization and setting up of anti-frost systems (another plague for the vines of the region). The current productive vineyard surface area is 4,580 hectares. Read less

(Past tasting 6 Apr 2013) Herby, citrousy nose. Lots of citrous notes on palate. Fresh!

A restrained nose of citrus floral mineral reduction and algae slides into impressively rich powerful serious and concentrated flavors that are almost painfully intense on the explosive and strikingly long finish. This is a classic Bougros with its robust and muscular big-bodied flavors. - Comments: Don t miss! Burghound.

Note: from a 2 ha parcel at the bottom section of the vineyard; even so, the vineyard is so steep here that it must be worked entirely by hand as tractors would be dangerous to use. Here the nose is moderately similar to that of the Bougros except th... Burghound. This also brims with classic Chablis character with a wonderfully fresh and exuberant nose of floral, sea breeze and mineral reduction notes that introduce richer and more concentrated middle weight flavors that also possess a bit more complexity on ... Note: from two parcels of vines that total 2.55 ha, or 22% of the entire appellation.
