At the foot of the majestic Schlossberg hill in Alsace stands one of the finest estates in all of France. Domaine Weinbach is run with consummate skill and total dedication by Colette Faller and her two daughters, Catherine and Laurence. In the words of Robert Parker, “Colette and her daughter Laurence... pushed Weinbach to the pinnacle of Alsace’s qualitative pyramid.” Domaine Weinbach was established by the Order of Capuchin monks in 1612. The “Clos des Capucins” vineyard surrounds the domaine; the prestigious “Schlossberg” vineyard (the first terroir in Alsace to receive the status of Grand Cru), the Grand Cru “Furstentum”, and the adjacent “Altenbourg” vineyard rise above the clos. The domaine has 62 acres of vineyards in the heart of Kayserberg’s hills and valleys. During the French Revolution, Domaine Weinbach was sold as a national property. In 1898, Théodore Faller and his brother Jean-Baptiste purchased the Domaine and five hectares of vineyards and left it to their son and nephew, Théo. Since 1979, the estate has been run by Théo’s widow, Colette Faller, and recently their daughter Laurence took over the winemaking, with Catherine as marketing director. The grapes are hand-harvested, pressed directly as whole clusters in modern horizontal pneumatic presses. The must settles for 24 hours at cellar temperature and is slowly matured in large, ancient oak casks, using only indigenous yeasts. Filtering is through diatomaceous earth before bottling, which starts in April and finishes in mid-July. The wines are remarkable for their balance and finesse, their intensity and concentration, which is achieved by drastically pruning the vines to limit yields per hectare to nearly one-half that typical in Alsace. Harvesting is late, done when the fruit attains optimum ripeness. All of the domaine’s wines are produced from their own vineyards, a most unusual accomplishment in Alsace, and are therefore 100 % estate grown and estate-bottled. Read less

A dry Riesling - rich with a nice blend of petrol, smoke and minerality. Some citrus on the nose with star fruits. Very nice. Served with lobster medallion, sweet breads and green asparagus.

The Fallers 2005 Gewurztraminer Mambourg Selection de Grains Nobles offers a striking aromatic melange of musky flowers litchi and melon liqueur a glycerin-rich buttery-textured and enveloping mouthful of fruits and honey and a luscious finish in which pineapple and melon offer unquenchable juiciness and prevent high residual sugar upstaging this wines manifest wealth of flowers and spices or interfering with a finish of exceptional cut and clarity for Gewurztraminer. I would revisit this in 5-7 years but have no compunction about holding it for 20. -David Schildknecht Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

A serious Gewürztraminer, this evokes toasted bri- oche, cinnamon, vanilla and lychee flavors. Almost dry, this is well-balanced and creamy, with mineral and white pepper accents emerging at the end. Originating largely in the lower slopes of the Schlossberg (with more particulate matter) the 2005 Riesling Cuvee Saint Catherine also incorporates parcels from just outside that cru. Almond honey lemon oil peaches and pungent hints of botrytis spice in the nose prepare the way for a densely-concentrated rich oily-textured pungently spicy and faintly bitter palate that lacks the refinement clarity or precision of the Schlossberg bottling. Tactile fruit skin and botrytis give the non-sweet finish of this Riesling a certain gritty extension that offers counterpoint to its honey and peaches. The dynamic trio of Fallers continues to bottle some of France s (hardly just Alsace s) richest and most flamboyant wines. Beginning with 2005 all of their vineyards are being biodynamically farmed. Laurence Faller finds their 2005s in general "more focused and clear" (this was especially true of Riesling) despite their often prominent botrytis component and the 2004s richer. I suppose it goes without saying but one has to carefully scrutinize each Weinbach label so numerous are the cuvees. And as wonderful as is the distinctiveness exhibited by the vast majority of wines here even a geek like yours truly could be forgiven for asking whether somewhat fewer different ottling might benefit consumers as well as journalists! From lower sections of the Altenbourg and neighboring parcels the 2005 Gewurztraminer Cuvee Laurence exudes roses bacon fat and honey slathers the palate in creamy but refreshingly juicy honey- and spice-drenched peaches and litchis and seduces the next sip irresistibly with its long lush finish. This wine is unlikely to tire (nor you of it) for at least a dozen more years during which some of its significant though already well-integrated sweetness will back off a bit. The dynamic trio of Fallers continues to bottle some of France s (hardly just Alsace s) richest and most flamboyant wines. Beginning with 2005 all of their vineyards are being biodynamically farmed.
