Domaine Terlato Chapoutier 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"A tank aged blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier, the 2010 Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier Shiraz – Viognier is upfront and deeply fruited with ripe plum and blackberry like qualities giving way to notions of leafy herbs, subtle eucalyptus, and white pepper on the nose. Very Cotes du Rhone like on the palate, with a round, supple mouth feel, excellent acidity, and a classically dry finish, this brilliant value is opens up with air, has loads of charm and class, and should evolve gracefully for 5-6 years...90" Rhone Report 06/12 "Dark and spicy, with violet notes around the blackberry and mineral flavors, finishing with shades of pepper and smoke. Drink now through 2016...90" WS 'Smart Buy' 5/12

The Story: Renowned Rhone Valley innovator Michel Chapoutier unlocks the potential of soil and sun in Victoria, Australia. Vineyard: When Michel saw Malakoff he said “Greatness is possible here.” The Lieu Dit Malakoff Shiraz is a single vineyard with 46 planted acres on an Eastern facing slope. The Shiraz-Viognier is grown further south on the Geelong peninsula. Soil: At Malakoff, red schist allows deep root penetration and contains high levels of iron. The schist combines with quartz which adds flinty character and aromas of white peppercorn. Climate: Continental with extreme daily swings in temperature (can change 45⁰ F to 100⁰ F) which allows a later harvest than is typical in the region for enhanced ripeness that preserves complex aromas and flavors. The fruit for Shiraz Viognier comes from the more moderate Geelong peninsula with cooling maritime breezes. Viticulture: The Malakoff vineyards are planted on their own rootstocks, farmed with minimal irrigation and grown with a focus on low yields (less than 1 ton/acre for Malakoff) all of which combine to produce intensely flavored, complex fruit. The Shiraz Viognier vineyards are grafted to 19th century French rootstocks. Vinification: They ferment in concrete tanks for a longer, slower, gentler maceration that results in precise tannin and delicacy of flavor with minerality and spice intact. The Shiraz-Viognier partially co-ferments to enhance and the color extraction and combine the flavors. Aging: 100% aged in French oak for 10-12 months Read less

Dark as night, the opaque purple hue lures you into a nose of dark berry, cured meat, roasted herbs and graphite. Serious nose for a value-driven wine! Opaque and black-purple in color, the bouquet is backward and reticient because of its youth but its not hard to eek out scents of crisp blueberries and hints of provencal herbs knowing that more will be revealed with time. Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier combines the vision of Anthony J. Terlato, the founder of luxury importer and marketer Terlato Wines International, and Michel Chapoutier, the esteemed Rhône grower and vintner whose compelling wines have been exalted by critics around the world. The origin of the Terlato & Chapoutier partnership in Australia dates back to 1998, when Chapoutier enthusiastically told Terlato about a top vineyard site in Australia. Located on an eastern-facing slope on the southern edge of the Pyrenees Hills in western Central Victoria, the region’s soil could produce "great wines," according to Chapoutier. An impressive offering, this is a unique blend, using the Côte Rôtie tradition of combining 5% Viognier with Syrah, which produces a spicy, aromatic wine. The vines are planted on 19th century French rootstock, so yields are low and the grapes concentrated and deeply flavored. After destemming, fermentation takes place in cement and stainless steel tanks. Maceration is extended up to 3 weeks in order to give the wine the structure and added richness required for aging and stability. The Viognier grapes are added during fermentation to brighten the must and bring out the flavors. This wine is a Wine Spectator Smart Buy scoring 90 points, they said "Dark and spicy, with violet notes around the blackberry and mineral flavors, finishing with shades of pepper and smoke. Drink now through 2016."
