The Story: Renowned Rhone Valley innovator Michel Chapoutier unlocks the potential of soil and sun in Victoria, Australia. Vineyard: When Michel saw Malakoff he said “Greatness is possible here.” The Lieu Dit Malakoff Shiraz is a single vineyard with 46 planted acres on an Eastern facing slope. The Shiraz-Viognier is grown further south on the Geelong peninsula. Soil: At Malakoff, red schist allows deep root penetration and contains high levels of iron. The schist combines with quartz which adds flinty character and aromas of white peppercorn. Climate: Continental with extreme daily swings in temperature (can change 45⁰ F to 100⁰ F) which allows a later harvest than is typical in the region for enhanced ripeness that preserves complex aromas and flavors. The fruit for Shiraz Viognier comes from the more moderate Geelong peninsula with cooling maritime breezes. Viticulture: The Malakoff vineyards are planted on their own rootstocks, farmed with minimal irrigation and grown with a focus on low yields (less than 1 ton/acre for Malakoff) all of which combine to produce intensely flavored, complex fruit. The Shiraz Viognier vineyards are grafted to 19th century French rootstocks. Vinification: They ferment in concrete tanks for a longer, slower, gentler maceration that results in precise tannin and delicacy of flavor with minerality and spice intact. The Shiraz-Viognier partially co-ferments to enhance and the color extraction and combine the flavors. Aging: 100% aged in French oak for 10-12 months Read less

Oooh - disagreement on this one within the Sediment blog! Following PK's enthsuiasm (below), CJ responds with: "I couldn’t finish the bottle, no matter how hard I tried. It just filled me with woozy, oppressed, overstuffed gloom. It was like thin treacle poured over a flagstone floor. What is it with this terrible stuff?" His full unfortunate experience is on http://sedimentblog.blogspot.com/2010/10/terlato-chapoutier-shirazviognier-2007_28.html

"The wine itself was absolutely delicious, a description I am thrilled to be able to employ within the Sediment blog. First I gave it an hour in a claret decanter. The nose is cedary but creamy, and the wine has the richness, the spicy warmth of a Cote-Rotie; but with the weight reduced by the absence of oak, and the little lift of the Viognier (a grape I associate with appley white wines), it just sings off the back of the palate. There’s a lighter, fruity note of summer about it, rather than the autumn and winter I associate with Shiraz. If I have any criticism, it’s that the absence of the oak meant I missed having something to tether the wine down, and make it a slower drink – but perhaps that’s my justification (if any were needed) for polishing off the bottle in a single session."
