Domaine Richaud Cairanne 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

Richaud might be situated closer to the Languedoc than Burgundy, but stylistically he sees himself as having more in common with the Cote d’Or and is dismissive of what he describes as the over extracted styles of the south. The key, he says, is balance, and this begins in the vineyard. He has also finished his new winery, with a succession of smaller tanks, which gives him greater flexibility for blending smaller parcels of wine. Tasting at the domaine takes twice as long but the experience is greatly rewarding, as Richaud demonstrates the rich palate that his meticulous vineyards yield him. Intense deep red in colour, the Cairanne has a powerful perfume, with notes of freshly cooked cherries, blackberries and red summer fruits. The palate displays the full fruitiness of the Grenache and the wilder character of the Mourvèdre. It is a rich, full-bodied wine with well-structured, supple tannins and a long, alluring finish.

The wine is deep and dark, powerful and elegant, superbly balanced, a great Côtes du Rhône from one of the superstars of the appellation.
