Domaine Pinot Gris 2013

Member Review by DWCPSC:

Wow. Light wine, this pinot gris is like eating a jolly rancher green apple candy. Strong green apple. Nice but not enough crisp acidity to handle much fat in the meal.

In my opinion the ultimate go to white for casual nights. Great honey suckle, stone fruits, white flowers on the nose. Melon, honey, and lemon lime flavors dominate the palate. Incredibly easy drinking, this is what an Oregon pinot gris is supposed to taste like.

Fresh and flirty, this winersquo;s racy green apple aromas are laced with smoke and talc. Not quite as rich or lasting as King Estatersquo;s Reserve, this still has a stony, cleanly drawn elegance, and it will continue to meld over the next half year or longer. Chill down and serve with roast chicken a la Zuni Cafeacute;.

Therersquo;s a crisp edge to the apple and honeydew aromas and flavors, which echo nicely on the finish. Drink now.

If America has a signature Pinot Gris, this is it mdash; widely available, crisply varietal, and now named ldquo;Signature Collection.rdquo; Fleshy pear and stone fruits form the central core; with some suggestions of tannin and light herb finishing up, along with a bit of vanilla wafer.

Santa Duc winery was originally founded in 1874 in Gigondas. The owner Yves Gras is the 4th generation winemaker at the property. He took over for his father in 1985. The Domaine has 13 ha. in Gigondas and about 10 ha. in other appellations. Here a wild bird watches over vineyards: the Grand-duc owl, that has been renamed "Santa-Duc." This wine is technically a Cote du Rhone Villages, as it comes from the best designated villages in the appellation. It is composed of 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 5% Mouvedre, with the average age of the vines being at least 40 years old. It has an exotic sort of pepperiness and primordial gaminess that you just don't find in the average Cote du Rhone. Sweetly rich, with explosive flavors of raspberry and boysenberry, it has a minerality and soaring structure that should help it evolve for the next several years, and last up to a decade in the cellar.Lightly herbal, scented with tart pear and tasting the same, this organically grown estate wine is King Estate's best Pinot Gris. Their signature bottling sets a good standard for the grape in Oregon; this elevates it with more detail, density and personality. The alcohol is a sensible 13%, allowing subtle green fruit and herb grace notes to emerge.

It has a lot more tropical character than most pinot gris. itrsquo;s got flavors that you might associate with sauvignon blanc, like passion fruit. With this wine, you could get into dishes that have a little more weight - richer fish, like langoustine and mussels, or chicken with a cream sauce.

This elegant gris leads with a leesy pear scent, accented by a floral note that recalls lilac. Its flavors fall between pear and pear skin, with a faint bitter almond note that gives it the firmness for pork loin.

This sunny young wine leads with aromas of ripe apple spiced with mace, accented with a touch of green herb. On the palate itrsquo;s as fresh as white wine gets, with a succulent midpalate thatrsquo;s leavened, elegantly with a fine, talc-like minerality.
