Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Deux Frères 2009
"The limited production 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres (400 cases) is 100% Grenache aged 40% in old barrels, 30% in tank, and 30% in new oak casks. A spicy, full-bodied, powerful effort, it is built for 20+ years of cellaring. The color is a saturated ruby/purple and the nose offers up scents of camphor, toast, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, incense, licorice, truffle and spice box. The wine’s concentration and superb intensity absorb the oak in a shockingly easy fashion. This classic, massive, rich Chateauneuf du Pape needs 2-4 years of bottle age and should drink well over the following two decades...93-95" WA 10/10

The nose is big but simple at first as all I could detect was black strap molasses. With time in glass sweet and rich smells of spice cookie, cinnamon gram cracker and black currant began to rise from the glass. The palate was like velvet on the front palate that turned searing acidity on the mid and showed cherry cough syrup, fig newton and milk chocolate. The finish tasted of burnt sugar. BUT, through all of this, the wine tasted more like a cocktail that anything else. THe overdone sweet verse alcohol was too much and some sips would literally leave the burning aftertaste of alcohol behind on the palate as if you'd just taken a shot of vodka. It was all T & A without any brains, good for a one night stand but do you really want to take it home and watch it age?
Closest to opus one 2007 I have encountered. Price rage of $145 inaccurate. Cannot locate for under ~$200. Let decant 1.5hrs.
I found this bottle a little hot with alcohol, and while the layers and texture were fascinating, the alcohol dominated the taste and undermined the structure.
Very sharp acidic attack which gives the wine a real spritz. There's some volatile acidity there, and I actually had this in a restaurant where another table had sent the wine back (it was fine, but I believe the acids threw them off). Supple and soft leather tones with gentle cherry flavors. Searing acidity throughout, with nice high top notes of lilac and roses. Sharp finish. Really needs to be paired with food.

Inky ruby. Assertive scents of black and blue fruit liqueur and incense show lovely clarity and take on spicecake and cola qualities with air. Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf's are some the hottest collectible wines on the market. With the incredible success of the 2007 vintage, this wine is destined for cult status. Robert Parker scored it 90-93 and said "the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape possesses a dense ruby/purple hue as well as wonderfully sweet aromas of blue and black fruits, underbrush, truffles, incense, and garrigue. It is full-bodied, opulent, fleshy, powerful and substantial in the mouth." Very limited due to extraordinary low yields.
