Domaine Pichot Vouvray 2015

External Review:

As a student of wine, it is fascinating to see how different regions, terroirs, varietals, and producers coped with the scalding temperatures and drought that characterized 2003. Cotton candy and white flowers make up the aromatic profile of Jean-Claude Pichotrsquo;s Vouvray. Initially, it comes across as pasty sweet on the palate, displaying over-ripe white fruit as well as herbal tea flavors amidst notes of candied almonds, yet with air its underlying minerality comes to the fore. Medium-bodied and silky-textured, it has a somewhat short finish. Readers willing to wait a year or two will enjoy this fine value more than those who open it now. Drink it between 2006 and 2009.

Seems like an easy-drinking Loire Valley white, good for people new to French cool-climate wines. Pop and pour. Tested at 68 deg F. Nose of powdery mineral and sugar and petrol (stinky sock) notes. In the mouth smooth and somewhat slick ripe slightly sweet fruit (citrus, pear, apricot, hint of green apple) plus elements from the nose. Finish of sour fruit (mostly citrus and sour apple) plus some mineral. Body medium plus. Glycerin. Acid medium. Off-dry or slightly sweeter.

This chenin blanc starts with a rose petal and tropical fruite nose before providing a unexpected fruit palate. Starfruit, pineapple and pear smother the tongue in a delightful blend before lingering in a balanced fruit finish. Pairs well with poultry, fish, or a warm summer day.

Glass full of sweet, ripe red apples. Food pairings: 1.White Bean puree – meaty, earthiness of the bean puree stood apart from the sweet taste of the wine. Didn’t really go together because the food & wine stood out individually. 2.Smoked Salmon – ditto, but went better. Ultimately the wine will be too sweet for the fish but initial taste is good, maybe as an appetizer, not an entree. 3. Szechuan Shrimp – sweetness of wine brought out the spiciness of shrimp. I LIKE THIS COMBINATION because I love wines that showcase the spice instead of masking it. 4.Fresh Asparagus – no bitterness in the asparagus b/c of the wine 5.Olive & Anchovy tapenade – the bitterness of the tapenade was covered temporarily by the sweetness of the wine 6. Milk Chocolate – equal sweetness, very nice and surprising pairing. I will definitely be pairing this again.

citrus, peaches, minerals, honey and floral notes on the nose; off dry balanced nicely by strong acidity with a nice texture; fantastic for the price

Delicate floral nose, balanced acid, but not dry. The texture is medium weight and flows over the tongue nicely. Flavor has some tart fruits, like citrus with apricots. This is a very enjoyable table or relaxation wine. It goes great with baked chicken or Chinese food.

Off-dry and flattering, with tasty quince, fig and pear flavors backed by a lilting floral note on the lively finish. Drink now through 2012.

The 2002 Vouvray bursts from the glass with profound mineral, white flower, spice, and candied pear aromas. Light to medium-bodied, it is pure, juicy, tangy, and satin-textured. This off-dry wine (the sweetness is barely noticeable) offers flavors reminiscent of almond candy drenched in sweet lemon juice. In addition, its finish is long, supple, and flavorful. Projected maturity: nowndash;2010.

The stone fruit flavors in this wine are ripe and juicy, accented by waxy, almond-like aromas and focused by taut acidity. As always, an excellent value from this estate.

Reticent on the nose, but lush and bold on the palate, with pear, spice, melon and fig flavors. Juicy finish brings you back for more. Delicious. Drink now through 2005.

A lean, minerally style, with fig, green almond, orange blossom and mineral notes that stay nicely focused through the lithe finish. Drink now through 2009.

This vineyard, situated on the premiers coteaux of Vouvray, offers low yields in order to maintain its high intensity of flavor. This fresh, floral Chenin Blanc is rich, slightly dry, pure and concentrated. It has the perfect crispness to accent seafood dishes or to keep you quenched on a warm spring night.
