- Jean-Louis Moissenet has directed this 4.5 ha domaine since 1988 though only bottling for commercial purposes since 1995. He discussed the background of the domaine and interestingly, told me that many of the vines were planted by his grandfather Henri Lamarche of Domaine Lamarche in Vosne-Romanée. Moissenet describes his viticultural approach as one of mostly lutte raisonné (a philosophy of vineyard management whereby treatments are applied only in response to a direct threat, rather than systematically). Vine age is deliberately kept as high as possible as Moissenet practices repiquage, read more...whereby individual vines are replaced rather than large portions of a parcel being replanted at the same time, which is far more economical. The harvest is 100% manual with the sorting work done at the cuvérie followed by 100% destemming, cold maceration of around 4 days and a total cuvaison of 10 to 12 days. Because there is no racking, fining or filtration, enzymes are used for clarification but not extraction. New oak averages from 20 to 30%. Moissenet says that he is searching for fruit forward wines that have force and will keep these characteristics, even after 10 years of bottle age. Moissenet said that 2001 is an excellent vintage though curiously, or at least in a departure from what many vignerons in Pommard told me, he also noted that the vintage is somewhat rustic in style. He went on to say that he did even more sorting work in 2001 than in 2000 but that it paid dividends because we did not chaptalize any of our wines and sugars were all at 13% or higher. (No present American importer). Note: from a sizeable 1 ha parcel of 70+ year old vines Beautifully complex if relatively discreet red and black fruit aromas trimmed in subtle earth notes followed by dusty, round, nicely powerful flavors and a velvety, long, very persistent finish. To be sure, this is solidly structured and possesses the best long term potential. (hide)
