- Michel Gros, who is a student of the weather and nuances of every vintage and thus a great source of information, calls 2005 a practically ideal vintage from start to finish and the kind where the description of it should be put in a textbook to teach students what makes a perfect year. There was no rot or disease and thus even those who were too lazy to treat had near perfect grapes. I even had one neighbor who treated twice at the beginning of the season and then lost his tractor when it broke down and couldn't be repaired and still had excellent quality! I did a bit of green harvesting but it was one read more...vine in every five that needed it and those were mostly young vines that were more vigorous. The growing season was dry but we had a bit of rain whenever we needed it and only one year in ten is like this. I began picking on September 25th under ideal conditions and didn't start picking in the Hautes Côtes until October 7th. There was no sorting at all and this was the cleanest crop that we've had since 1999. This of course sounds late and in a sense it was but many people picked this late simply because there was no disease pressure and the weather conditions were perfect. And as it turned out, people could have picked even later as the dry and clear weather lasted until the end of October. We brought in around 40 hl/ha, which includes all of our appellations with sugars that ranged between 12.2 and 13%. I concentrated most wines around 5%, which is the equivalent of adding one-half a degree of sugar. However, I did not heat the finished wines at the end of their fermentations the way I usually do because the skins were so thick and the dry extract levels so high that I didn't feel as though the wines needed any more extraction of either color or tannins. When I typically heat the wines, I do so at temperatures between 38 and 40º C but in 2005, the fermentation temperatures did not exceed 35º. Another interesting aspect is the variability in the speed of the malos as some wines finished in March and others did not finish until August. Moreover, the wines clarified almost instantly and with only half the normal amount of lees. Overall, 2005 is a terrific vintage that reminds me of 1999. And like 1999, the wines should age for years and it's particularly good in the Hautes Côtes because there is a level of phenolic maturity there that is rarely seen. I was most impressed with the quality of the Gros 2005s and I recommend them to you, particularly the Nuits 1er. (Martin Scott, Lake Success, NY, Chambers & Chambers, San Francisco, CA, The Stacole Co., Boca Raton, FL; La Reserve and Thorman Hunt & Co., UK). Note: from 3 different parcels in Aux Réas, La Columbièe and Au-Dessus de la Rivière; raised in <35% new wood A touch of wood spice frames the earthy and spicy dark berry fruit nose that gives way to generous, full, rich and sweet flavors that are less precise yet more powerful with firm tannins that are almost completely buried on the persistent finish. This is very Vosne in style and character and sufficiently forward that it should drink well young. (hide)

- Lovely purity and clarity. It has sensual fruit, a satiny texture and a palate with excellent substance. Finely grained tannins and long finish lively with fruit. Delightful. Drink 2012/15 plus. (SM)
